Johnny Depp's 'Pirates' will sail 'On Stranger Tides'

johnnydepp_atworldsend_290.jpgDisney announced the title for the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" at its D23 expo: Capt. Jack Sparrow's next adventure will be "On Stranger Tides."

So what do we know? "On Stranger Tides" is the title of a 1987 book by Tim Powers, one of our favorite authors. The story, though, seems a bit pedestrian for an accomplished scoundrel like Jack Sparrow: A young puppeteer named Jack Shandy is pressed into service as a pirate and must eventually take on Blackbeard to save his lady love.

Of course, the book also includes voodoo and the Fountain of Youth, the second of which had already been rumored to be Sparrow's goal in a potential fourth "Pirates" chapter.

Powers' publicist wouldn't comment other than to refer us back to Disney, so we're cautiously optimistic. Beyond that, all we know is that Johnny Depp is on board -- he attended the title's announcement, apparently "sailing in" on a pirate ship -- and that Rob Marshall is in talks to direct.

In other D23 news, Robert Zemeckis has been officially confirmed as director of a "Yellow Submarine" remake. Rather than cartoon animation, the new version will be 3D performance capture.

i knew i should have gone to this convention.

I am a little surprised that Depp is sticking with the series. It's a good movie theme but not as professional acting wise as he likes to make himself out to be.

Woo Hooo! Jack is back!

I beg to differ with Steve. Depp is the not the average Hollywood diva. The zillion dollars they're paying him doesn't hurt either.

Pedestrian? If only any of the three POTC movies had been half as inspired as Powers' book.

The first movie was cute. I ignored the plot holes(Elizabeth had stolen a coin too, but apparently pretty people don't turn to skeletons in moonlight) because the story was so engaging. The next movie was dark and brooding. The third installment was incomprehensible. If they make another movie, I think I'll accept a burned copy from a friend. Come on people, its called editing. Look into it.

Just keep Orlando Bloom away from the set.

WHY???? Are you broke? Stay in france, work there. Another sequel is a bit much.

HEY ,WHAT HAPENS ? i think it´s a good news, i love you jhonny ,ignores that people, they are envy that you are so successfull ,those movies earned big money and i hope this one too!!!! good luck!

Jaded, only people who took the coins from the chest were cursed, which is why Orlando didn't sufffer from it either, not a plot hole.

If the 4th doesn't have Orlando or Kiera and they do take the time out to write it well and they put the focus on fun adventure, not bloated drama, then this could be a good move on Johnnys part to wash out the bitter taste that was At Worlds End
