Jessica Lange in 'Grey Gardens': HBO's big Emmy winner
Jessica Lange won her first Emmy Sunday for her performance in HBO's movie "Grey Gardens," playing a fictionalized version of the real-life Edith Bouvier Beale. The film is based on Albert and David Maysles' 1975 documentary about "Big Edie" and her daughter, "Little Edie," relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis who were discovered living in squalor on Long Island in the early 1970s. The documentary chronicles the conditions in which they lived and the heavily codepedent relationship between mother and daughter.
The HBO movie goes deeper into the the Beales' lives, using Little Edie's diaries to dramatize their earlier lives as members of Manhattan's high society and their gradual retreat from the world at their summer home in the Hamptons. In addition to Lange's victory, "Grey Gardens" won the Emmy for best made-for-TV movie, and Ken Howard won best supporting actor in a movie or miniseries. Drew Barrymore, who played Little Edie, and Jeanne Tripplehorn, who played Jackie, were also nominated.
The 60-year-old Lange has been nominated for Emmys twice in the past. She's also won two Oscars.
Here's a look at some scenes from "Grey Gardens" and the stars talking about inhabiting their characters.

Jessica looked beautiful last night at the Emmy Awards...she's aging really well! Congratulations on her win! I want to see if I can get "Grey Gardens" on DVD yet - don't get HBO but it sounds like a good movie to see!
Funny, But I was kinda saddened to see that it looks like Jessical Lange has gone under the knife once to many, or had one to many injections in her face... I sure wish these old stars would just age naturally.
I was surprised that Drew Barrymore didn't pull through for the win. Lange was incredible in her role, but Barrymore was a true revelation as "Little Edie." Grey Gardens definitely provided a career best for Barrymore, a performance which also proved to be one of the better female performances of the past year in both cinema and television.
When Jessica Lange was coming up I was thinking how good she looked-great hair, beautiful green dress, nice smile. When she was making her speech her face just looked wierd, barely moved... why would an actress make her face expressionless? She should lay off the botox...
I don't think Jessica Lange has had any plastic surgery or botox. We as an audience just aren't used to seeing celebrities age naturally, so it looks "odd" to us! I love Jessica Lange- such a lovely woman!
I don't know how they chose. Drew and Jessica both did such excellent jobs. I had seen the documentary and was just amazed at the 2 actors' performances.
"Grey Gardens" is a delight from start to finish. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange had amazing chemistry on screen. Two ladies at the top of their game. Thank you, HBO, for giving these two great actresses a powerful showcase.
