'Criminal Minds' may (finally) get a spinoff

criminalminds_290.jpgMore than a year after the idea first surfaced, a spinoff of "Criminal Minds" may see the light of day later this season.

CBS and the show's producers are starting to plan for a planted spinoff of the crime drama, which would likely air this spring. Writer/executive producer Chris Mundy will pen the episode, based on story he conceived with fellow exec producer Ed Bernero.

The Hollywood Reporter says the spinoff episode will feature a new group of characters, similar to what CBS has done with its "CSI" franchise and "NCIS: Los Angeles."

Word of a possible "Criminal Minds" spinoff first surfaced in the summer of 2008, but the project was put on the back burner last season.

In other development news:

- Seth Green and his fellow "Robot Chicken" masterminds are working on an animated pilot for FOX.

The network has ordered a pilot presentation and script for a show that explores "family life and a high school," the HR reports. Green, Matthew Senreich and Tom Root are executive producing, but unlike the stop-motion animation of "Robot Chicken," the new show will look more like the hand-drawn animation of FOX's other prime-time cartoons.

- Also at FOX, former "Veronica Mars" scribe Diane Ruggiero is set to tell some ghost stories.

Ruggiero, who also created "The Ex List," is writing a dramedy about a group of estranged siblings forced to share the family home after their father dies. The catch: The house is haunted.

Why do we need a spin-off of a show that's not that great to begin with? If we're going that direction, why not do a spin-off of Ghost Whisperer called Live People Shouter or something?

I love Criminal Minds. I have seen every episode. It is worth trying a spinoff. Though I tend to find most originals better. I prefer the original CSI the best out of the 3 and I love NCIS more than NCIS: LA. That 70's Show was way better than That 80's Show too.

CBS has become the network of the spin-offs ... maybe next year we can get a "Mentalist"-spin-off

There are too many of these crime shows already.

I think NBC should do a spin off of The Biggest Loser called the Biggest Gainer.

where can I sign up!!

Since almost all of CBS crime show spinoffs are big hits, why shouldn't they develop a spinoff of Criminal Minds? Sounds like good business.

The first couple of seasons of criminal minds were good, but lately it hasn't been great.

No!!!!!! No more spin-offs!!!! Seriously, there're too many crime dramas already. And face it, the spin-off usually isn't that great. NCIS:LA is just okay, and the 2 CSI spin-offs are just not good. Lets just stick to the original.

I love Criminal Minds. It's an excellent show! A big part of the reason I love it, though, is the current cast (liked Mandy Patinkan(sp?) better than his replacement)so I'd have to see the spin-off before I knew whether or not I'd like it. One thing's for sure, it'll be better than the reality shows on TV.
