Spielberg will remake Jimmy Stewart's 'Harvey'

Stevenspielberg_290 While Steven Spielberg does some undercover work on remaking the "Matt Helm" spy movies, he's got his eyes on another update.

Well, sort of. How do you get your eyes on a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit? Yep, the trades have confirmed the 'Berg as director of "Harvey," previously a 1950 Jimmy Stewart comedy about a drunk who claims the see-through carrot-muncher is his best friend.

There's no word on how Spielberg plans to update the story (especially after "Donnie Darko's" rather darker take on the concept) or who might star. Filming is set to begin early next year.

-- Speaking of remakes, "Chicago" remake director Rob Marshall is in talks to direct Disney's fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While there's no hint yet at where the story will go, Johnny Depp has already signed on to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Ugh does there really need to be another Pirates movie? The first one was great, but the following movies have just tarnished the fun of the first one with way too many plot lines and weird druginduced scenes.

Jimmy Stewart's "Harvey" was a total cl***ic. I doubt I could really appreciate a remake.

I love the movie and the play Harvey. I just hope that Spielberg doesn't mess it up to "modernize" it.

It's a cl***ic which usually means it will be bad but I hope not.

How can you update Harvey. If you make Harvey visible you ruin the whole charm of the film. I can only think of one actor who could take Stweart's place and that would be Tom Hanks but even he probably couldn't live up to Stewart's gentle charm. I wish people would just leave cl***ics well enough alone. There must be plenty of bad films that had a good premise that could be improved - remake them.

Havent we seen this movie already?? Donnie Darko??? Is that the original?? Or is this totally diffrent??

I would like to know??

Donnie Darko has nothing to do with Harvey. Harvey was a wonderful movie with a wonderful cast. Jimmy Stewart was brilliant and there is not an actor in Hollywood today that can equal his abilities. I like Tom Hanks, but he wouldn't do justice to this roll either, especially since they will ruin this story. It'd be like remaking Arsenic and Old Lace, can't be done.

Harvey is my all time favorite film. I agree it is an untouchable cl***ic, but Steven Speilberg is an amazing director and I'm curious to see his interpretation. The only other person I can imagine as Elwood P. Dowd is John Cusack.

There's no way they could capture the magic that's in the original, but even with that in mind a remake might be pretty cool.

WHY??? Why do directors try to ruin perfectly beautiful classics by remaking them...I can only think that they have NO ideas of their own...thereby stealing everyone else. Speilberg stole the American Tale Mouse from old cartoons...why not steal everyone's material.
