'South Park' releases its original, unaired pilot

Kyle_southpark_290 "South Park" is still really funny, but it looks a lot better than it used to, thanks to creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker not animating every episode with construction paper.

That's how they did it for the show's very first episode, though -- and for the next month, you can see the original "South Park" pilot in its entirety on SouthParkStudios.com.

The pilot is basically an extended version of "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe," the episode that kicked off the series on Aug. 13, 1997, 12 years ago today. But it has almost four minutes of additional footage that has never aired. South Park Studios will have the pilot online for the next 30 days; you can also watch with commentary from animation director Eric Stough and South Park Studios creative director Chris Brion.

"South Park" has gotten more sophisticated over the years -- Parker and Stone have refined their voice work, the animation is a whole lot cleaner now, and its jokes aim higher than aliens inserting probes into Cartman's butt (at least sometimes). But what's really cool about rewatching the pilot is remembering how damn funny it is -- this was not a show that needed much time to find its comedic voice.

The unaired version of the pilot is accessible through the link above. If you'd like to compare and contrast, the version of "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" that ran on Comedy Central is here.

Is this show still on the air?

One of the shows that has been consistently funny

Wow, 12 years. This show put Comedy Central into the main stream well before 'The Daily Show' was relevant.

Even with new technology they still only make 4 or 5 episodes a half season, whatever that is.

This is the only cartoon that actually deserves a Best Comedy Emmy. There wasn't a single episode of "Family Guy" ever that was as sharp or as funny as any of the "South Park" episodes from last year -take just a few "About Last Night..." or "The Ring", and understand why I complain.

Funny episode. Too bad they didn't keep some of Cartman's other family memebers on or continue to let his mom lose it and finally yell orders at him.

What Family Guy not as sharp as South Park?

I disagree.

FG is on regular network and pushes the envelope. SP is on cable where it has freedom of boundaries.

SOUTH PARK WAS FUNNY..IS FUNNY...STILL FUNNY..♥ IT

I agree that SP was dead on this season. Fishsticks was hilarious and only got better the next day when Kanye blogged about his hurt feelings in capital blue letters, all serious like. FG, on the other hand... it was predictable and occasionally just plain bad. Pushing envelopes on FOX when you are bringing in ratings is not at all the same as pushing an envelope on ABC or CBS.
