'Rescue Me' takes its last call in 2011

denisleary_rescueme_290.jpgFX says it will end its drama series "Rescue Me" in 2011 after seven seasons.

The cable channel has ordered 19 additional episodes of the show about New York firefighters, Variety reports. They will likely be broken up into two blocks with nine or 10 airing next year and the remainder coming in 2011.

FX is employing a similar strategy with "Nip/Tuck," which will air 10 of its final 19 episodes starting in October and will finish up with nine next year.

"Rescue Me" has earned seven Emmy nominations over the five seasons that have aired thus far, including two for star/co-creator Denis Leary's work as psychologically damaged firefighter Tommy Gavin. Leary and co-creator Peter Tolan were also nominated for a writing Emmy in 2005, and guest star Michael J. Fox is nominated this year.

The show had an unusually long, 19-month hiatus between its fourth and fifth seasons owing mostly to the writers strike of 2007-08, and ratings have suffered some this season as a result. Episodes are averaging only about 1.4 million viewers on their first airing; DVR and on-demand viewing push those numbers up about 35 percent.

The show's still good but its starting to get a little redundant. Tommy's lovelife is getting old & they aren't focusing on the other guys enough e****ally Franco.

Great, another fabulous show ruined by the writer's strike. Rescue Me is one of the 5 best on TV right now, and it's going away, being replaced by the never-ending onslaught of unscripted "reality" TV and variety shows. So much for TV Drama. Damned greedy writers. Damned greedy producers. It's the viewer who pays the price with good shows cancelled to be replaced with s#!t.

Dare I say it: rescue Rescue Me!

I really thought this was an exceptional year on the show.. I will miss this show when it is gone

Uh, nine or ten episodes is NOT a season. Just show 'em all at once, FX.
