Neil Patrick Harris is your latest 'American Idol' guest judge

Neilpatrickharris_howimetyourmother_290 Where Neil Patrick Harris finds the time is a mystery, but the "How I Met Your Mother" star and Emmy host has taken on yet another job.

Harris, who also hosted the Tony Awards this year, sat in with the "American Idol" judges Tuesday during a round of auditions in Dallas, E! Online notes. He's the eighth person to fill the seat vacated by Paula Abdul during the auditions for next season -- and the first without any serious ties to the music business.

Which is not to say he knows nothing about singing: Harris has performed in "Rent" and "Sweeney Todd," among other stage work, and played the title character in Joss Whedon's online sensation "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog."

Harris joins a guest-judge roster that also includes Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Joe Jonas.

To me it would make more sense to have Neil on during the competition and mentor the contestants during a showtune themed episode.

I was surprised that CBS allowed his to do this - especially after they pulled Kaley Cuoco from Grey's Anatomy last year.

I feel, if Simon does leave, and it does appear he will, I would definitely love to see Neil Patrick Harris succeed him as one of the judges. He has the same honesty as Simon, the same wit and knows what he is talking about when it comes to singing talent. Neil is very accomplished in everything he has ever done in the entertainment field, including singing on Broadway, and in his life. I have watched American Idol since the very first audition nine years ago - I am a very good judge of the talent from the first time I see them. The only year I was wrong on my winner was last year, and of course, we all know Adam was the actual winner, and still is, but that is a whole other discussion. I would definitely love to see Neil succeed Simon if he does choose to leave. I will very much miss him, I have always respected his expertise and decision making. Neil would be my number one choice to replace him.
