DJ AM: Cops find drugs in apartment, fate of MTV show uncertain

djam_290.jpgPolice reportedly found a "near-empty" bag of crack in DJ AM's apartment Friday night. Meanwhile, plans for MTV's "Intervention"-style show starring the celebrity spinner are in flux.

DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was found dead Friday evening in his apartment in New York. He was 36. An autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death, although multiple reports say that drugs are the likely culprit.

The New York Daily News, citing police sources, says cops found a bag of crack underneath Goldstein's body as they swept the apartment Friday night. The paper also says police found a glass pipe and "at least seven bottles" of prescription medication in the kitchen.

Goldstein had talked openly in the past about his addiction to cocaine and crack but had been sober for years. He also survived a plane crash in September 2008 in which he was badly burned.

He was planning to use his experience with addiction in an MTV series called "Gone Too Far," in which he attempted to help other addicts get clean.

"The only thing that ever worked for me is when a recovering addict tried to help me. One addict working with another is the only way I think that I ever would have gotten sober," Goldstein said at the summer TV press tour in late July. "So the one thing I offer these kids is a connection of I know exactly what it's like to have that craving that you just cannot stop. I know what it's like to feel like I'm never going to be able to live a sober life, like I'm going to lose all my friends, I'm going to be that square nerd. But I also know that I can't do just this much. Every time, I go overboard, and I go too far."

The fate of the show, which has shot eight episodes and was set for an October premiere, is unclear for now. MTV isn't commenting on its plans.

The network did, however, release a statement expressing sadness at his death: "Adam 'DJ AM' Goldstein's death is an incredible loss to the music community, his friends, family and his fans, and to those of us who had the privilege of working with him," the statement reads. "MTV was honored to support him as he helped young people battle their own addictions. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family."
