'Avatar' trailer: Beautiful and confusing
"Avatar" Day is Friday, but if you don't have your tickets for the extended preview playing in IMAX theaters, maybe a smaller, two-minute bite can whet your appetite.
The trailer for James Cameron's long-awaited film, about a paraplegic war veteran's ("Terminator Salvation's" Sam Worthington) odyssey on a planet called Pandora, hit the web Thursday, and as you would expect from Cameron, it's visually arresting. Even in a tiny online viewing window, the mix of live action and motion-capture animation looks amazing, and the world in which it takes place is gorgeous.
What you won't get from the nearly wordless trailer is much sense of what's going on. Briefly, in order to survive on Pandora, whose air is toxic to humans, the mind of Worthington's character, Jake, has to be downloaded into a synthetic body resembling that of the Na'vi, who are native to the planet. Once that happens, though, Jake finds himself torn between his new identity and his old one.
That's not really the purpose of this trailer, though. This is more along the lines of getting you to go, "Whoa -- this looks really cool," and on that front, it works pretty well.
Have a look, either below or at Apple's trailer site. What do you think of the peek at "Avatar"?

All the flying vehicles with CGI humans looks DREADFUL and like a video game. However, some stuff looks a lot better - the avatar in the tank and Sam's smile is a great shot. The initial awakening also looks good. The more away from human environments and smaller scenes with few CGI elements at a time - work best. Mixed bag.
This is the first movie James Cameron has directed since Titanic. The King of the World sure took his own sweet time getting back into the director's chair.
Yeah, the trailer looks like a video game. Also, isn't it funny how sympathetic aliens in the movies always have 2 eyes, 2 ears, one mouth, 2 hands and 2 feet. Hollywood constantly makes sympathetic aliens in man's image. Not very creative, now is it?
terrible cgi james has lost it, way to spend 300 million
i agree with one of the posters...the human form is a total accident created by chance over billions of years of evolution. why would another planet have given rise to life forms with virtually the same shape as humans?
Maybe the human design is intelligent design you Godless heathens.....
Uh, did I just watch a video game tease? The CGI integration in the trailer is lousy; I hope it will look better on the big screen. James Cameron needs to take lessons from Peter Jackson.
the sound when the shuttle breaches the atmosphere of pandora is BAAADDDAA***SSSS! (on apple HD version) i'm glad JC is diligent and takes the time that he requires between his films to fully refine the details in order to best present the artistic and creative craft of film making...similar to the transformational processes of Stanley Kubrick.
GOD you guys are lame. Lets just say all action movies look like video games... Even all the Star Wars movie... how about this, war in iraq looks like a video game. dropping bombs in Iraq looks like Call of Duty 4. Watcing airplanes crash into the twin tower looks like a video game, reminds me of a flight simulation game and crashing into buildings... how's that?
seems like an ok trailer.
The actual movie will probably be more engaging.
