'The Mentalist' gets a new boss

Terrykinney_unusuals_290 Patrick Jane is going to butt heads with a new superior next season.

Terry Kinney, who's coming off ABC's "The Unusuals," will guest-star in at least seven episodes of CBS' hit "The Mentalist," the network confirms. He'll play a character named Sam Bosco, the head of the California Bureau of Investigation's serial crimes unit, which is in charge of the Red John investigation.

He and Jane (Simon Baker) will come into conflict frequently, with Jane frustrated by Bosco's straight-arrow approach to crime-solving and Bosco looking for ways to drum Jane and his oddball methods out of the bureau.

What's more, Bosco also has a romantic past with Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), and the two share a dark secret.

Kinney was a regular on "Oz" throughout its six-season run on HBO. He played Sgt. Harvey Brown on "The Unusuals" this season; his other credits include "Kidnapped," "Canterbury's Law" and "The Laramie Project."

i knew they'd end up doing this eventually. i knew they'd introduce an ex of lisbon's who also happens to be a detective/cop/whatever, who also happens to get a case with them, who also happens to be a caustic prick and hates jane. thusly, jane hates him. and we get....what? friction?

eh. maybe it's just me, but i hate when these types of shows pull this storyline out of their ***. they did something similar in castle; i'm not really a fan of that show, but even i was annoyed by that storyline.

i really hope i'm wrong and it ends up being great tv.

Next thing you know, one of the characters will have a substance abuse problem. This is what happens when the lazy writers run out of ideas.

I'm huge fan of the Mentalist but I'm not a fan of friction within the "good guys". So that they're fighting bad guys and themselves. Yuck.

If only they had replaced Robin Tunney. She is a drag on this otherwise good show.

jane develops an addiction to pamprin; all is lost for a few episodes.

i agree, michael. that'll be next. it all seems like a cop-out at times.

Does this mean Gregory Itzin (Minelli) is out?

Do these clowns honestly think they are "improving" the show when they make these boneheaded decisions? How many successful programs have been seriously damaged by meddling from the higher ups?

I think the series is brilliant as it is and to change the formula would be a disaster.but am sure Patrick Janes character will ****e it up a little.Wether he is mean and moody or wearing a sunshine smile,Simon is a great actor and the next Columbo. As long as "Patrick" Stays the same it wil be worth watching!

Keep up the good work simon, we love you whichever role yr in. You deserve a nomination. You ARE the Star of the show.

I really like "The Mentalist"; however, Robin Tunney seems all wrong for the part of Lisbon. I find her (not the character) annoying.
