Mariahcarey_290jpg The immediate reaction from the Twitterverse on Tuesday to Mariah Carey's performance of "I'll Be There" at the Michael Jackson Memorial was largely negative:

  • "mariah carey needs to just stop" -- @NicholasBarbati
  • "just heard someone say Mariah Carey's finger did more singing than she did ..... lolololol" -- @TiJack
  • "Watched some of MJ's memorial today, I believe Mariah Carey has lost her voice. She really sounded bad." -- @911diva
  • "Mariah Carey seemed more into herself than honouring Michael Jackson"  -- @heroingirl
  • "Mariah Carey didn't put her all into that song. I feel she was holding out on the KING" -- @shaznyc
  • "Very surprised that Mariah Carey didn't get arrested on the stage for that pitiful performance today." -- @ZedalzaNewYork
  • "Ok on a lighter note. Is it me or does it sound like Mariah Carey struggles when she sings. She sounded a mess.  " -- @Keshia6
  • "As much respect and love I have for Mariah Carey and what she has done, her performance at Michael Jackson's memorial was a disgrace!!!" -- @jonasdesai
  • "So, CNN reported that Mariah Carey left during the memorial because she was too broken up ... I thought it was because her performance sucked" --  @Lilcinb
  • "I'm starting to think Mariah Carey was lip syncing all these years... how do you just loose your singing voice like that?" -- @keisean

And that's not even getting into those appalled by her low-cut neckline flashing her cleavage before noon.

Turns out, Mimi knew she wasn't up to snuff.

Tuesday evening, Carey took to Twitter herself to explain over the course of two Tweets to her 921,157 followers that: "Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me. I could barely keep myself from crying. I'm sorry that/I wasn't able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me."

We say give her a pass on this one. What about you? Feeling lenient?

Guys, do u know how hard it is to sing when your trying to keep yourself from crying?? It's almost impossible- we all know how talented she, so is let's be supportive of her.

personally, i never saw what was so great about mariah carey. her songs suck. she always makes it about her voice and not the music itself. i don't care how many octaves she can sing, it's all about the music ppl....

please, her singing sucks. she always over performs. and she needs to apologize for that dress. it's not appropriate at any church service and whether in the staple center or not, it was a memorial service.

I'm not a fan of hers. She's just too... I don't know, fake and conceited, but I can give her a p*** on the singing. MAYbe she was too broke up to sing. But the dress... that's just so NOT cl***y.

maybe she was really heart-broken.

She has a bad voice, and is over rated, plus she looked fat and ugly. Yep, that Mariah for you, no cl*** or talent and diva in her own mind.

she needed to put the girls away, it was a funeral. cleavage is not appropriate for a funeral, regardless of who you are.

I wouldn't have been able to sing at all, I'd have been too upset, so.... kudos to her for getting any of it out

I'm with Sarah - it's near impossible to sing while you're crying or on the verge of crying. I'm for giving her a break on that! And as far as the dress goes, I do agree that you tend to dress more conservatively for a funeral, but let's face it, this is NOT a normal funeral and Mariah Carey pretty much dresses like that every day of her life. I'm not saying it excuses her, but I can see why she (and/or her publicist who probably viewed this as a gig) thought at the time that the dress was a good idea.

Singing and performing is always hard, much less when you are stressed or crying or both. I don't know how close she truly was to MJ, but I can go to a funeral of someone I don't even know that well and still end up crying because of the emotional atmosphere and the kind words their loved ones say. I think under the cir***stances we can, and should, cut her a break.

slut slut slut...what else would you wear to a pedofile funeral? her voice was bad because she was singing live and without all the fancy editing equipment!
