Comic-Con: 'Avatar' Day set for Aug. 21
At the Comic-Con panel for his latest film, the director announces that on Aug. 21, fans will get to see a portion of the 3-D film in theaters, four months before the release date on Dec. 18.
"It occurs to me that there's a global audience out there, so I was wondering if there's a way to capture this kind of magic for people who couldn't get to Comic-Con," explains Cameron. "We're going to do something really unprecedented. It's a bit of a social marketing experiment if you will.
"We're going to take over as many IMAX 3D, ditial and film IMAX theaters plus selected theaters worldwide on Aug. 21 that we can get our hands on. We're letting a global audience, an international audience come to see 15 minutes of 'Avatar' for free on Aug. 21."
"Avatar" centers on the alien planet Pandora, where a human mind is used to animate an avatar, a physical being created by meshing human DNA and the native alien DNA. Ex-Marine Jake takes on an avatar and finds himself torn between two worlds.
The cast consists of Sam Worthington as Jake, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.
