'The Tonight Show' pays tribute to Ed McMahon
Conan O'Brien took a few minutes during "The Tonight Show" Tuesday to pay tribute to one of the men who made the show the institution it is: Ed McMahon.
McMahon, who died early Tuesday at age 86, was a fixture on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" for 30 years, usually serving as Carson's setup man in comedy bits but often giving as good as he got. He rarely upstaged his boss, but he also had a pretty fine sense of when to burst Carson's bubble a little, as a few of the clips below indicate.
"It's impossible, I think, for anyone to imagine 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson' without Ed McMahon," O'Brien said. "... For 30 years, Ed played his part perfectly, he played it with effortless joy -- and sitting alongside Johnny, Ed was an indelible part of what I think was the most iconic two-shot in television history. There will never be anything like that again."

I thought this was very well-done and respectful. It wasn't too heavy and it really gave homage to Ed. And some pretty funny stuff with Conan's desk chat about Ed with Andy always interrupting.
It would have been nice if they could have brought on some guests who worked with Ed, such as Doc Severinson, but I realize doing that on less than a day's notice is tough. I think Ed deserves a full episode tribute- maybe they will put one together sometime.
no late night show has had a side kick like mcmahon and the dude gave away tons of money through publishers clearing house, whats not to like!
