Should 'Hawthorne' stick around?
"Hawthorne" premiered on TNT Tuesday night after a round of mixed-to-negative reviews. But now that critics have had their say, we want to know what you thought.
The medical drama starring Jada Pinkett Smith as the patients-first, rule-breaking head of nursing at a Virginia hospital, premiered to solid ratings: About 3.8 million people tuned in. That's well below the level of TNT's biggest show, "The Closer," but still a pretty good number for a cable series. It should finish in the top 20 for the week.
(TNT's other Tuesday drama premiere, "Saving Grace," drew a shade under 3.5 million viewers. That's just above its average for last season.)
Here's what some critics had to say about "Hawthorne." You can weigh in yourself in the comments and the poll below.
Mary McNamara, LA Times: "'Character-driven' shouldn't mean boring, and the front-loading of righteous pro-nurse speechifying by Christina doesn't do 'Hawthorne' any favors."
David Hinckley, New York Daily News: "The pieces are in place for a solid drama-with-humor, the kind that cable channels are serving like aspirin these days. The problem is this show hasn't quite figured out yet how to integrate all the components into a uniform tone and direction."
Maureen Ryan, Chicago Tribune: "... has the painfully earnest, painfully obvious aura of something that was made by people who've never seen an episode of 'ER,' 'House' or any of the canny star vehicles that cable channels have cooked up in recent years for top-notch actresses."
Alessandra Stanley, New York Times: "Christina doesn't fit the TNT mold of unconventional heroine; she couldn't be more predictably valiant. And that is oddly counterintuitive at a time when television increasingly savors imperfection."
Matthew Gilbert, Boston Globe: "Smith's Christina, also the widowed mother of a rebellious teen girl, is so unblemished, she's blandly off-putting. When a show wants me to worship a character this feverishly, I can't help it, I resist."

MOST PEOPLE FIND SEX TALK..INTERESTING..ESPECIALLY WEN ITS A CELEB...
sorry to say...but Will aand Jada and their brood are getting a bit nauseating to watch.
This show is kinda irrelevant with shows out there like ER or House and even Greys Anatomy. The nurses walked around and acted like they were smarter or better than the doctors were. It was kind of dumb idk. And I didn't like the casting of Jada Pickett Smith as the lead. This might be a keeper for the summer simply because of the lack of scripted shows during the summer months, but that would be the only reason. Skip this one people.
OH-KAY I GET IT SO SEX TALK WITH JADA IS A LITTLE BIT NAUSEATING LOL I GUESS..MAYBE..IDK.LOL
Glorifying nurses who break rules and don't know their place in the system? Big NO!!! Hawthorne is going around in a long white coat, pretending to be a doctor. Pinkett Smith is going around in a white coat, pretending to be an actress. Give me a break.
did i watch a different show??
i saw a show about a woman grieving for her recently dead spouse, who's lucky to have a great friend at work because her daughter and former mother in law are a holes. i'm so into finding out what happens with suicide david. see the potential with the head doctor character, and there are a couple side characters that make me definitely want to tune in next week.
md and critics, what was the difference between pinkett smith and falcon - both playing nurses who break rules and don't know their place in the system. uh duh. one is white and one is black. nurse jackie and hawthorne are quite similar shows except jackie can go a little further because it's on showtime. so give hawthorne a break. i loved it.
I agree with MD, too.
renee, you are just silly. no one said that the other show was better than hawthorne. i will reserve my judgement on edie falco because i haven't seen her show, but the premise of both shows is a major turn off for me!
I liked the show! I didn't see Nurse Hawthorne as "flawless!" But she had a good heart and wanted to help patients. Plus, she had to grieve the one year anniversary of her hubby's death. The other nurses also had great stories that I want to know more about!
Some of the worst people to deal with are nurses who think they know everything
