Oscars to include 10 Best Picture nominees
For the first time since 1943, the Academy Awards will expand the pool of Best Picture nominees to 10, officials announced today.
While the number of nominees fluctuated over the Academy's history, the field has been set at five potential winners for more than 60 years.
"Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize," Academy president Sid Ganis said in a statement. "I can't wait to see what that list of ten looks like when the nominees are announced in February."
The 82nd annual Oscars ceremony will be held March 7, 2010. Nominations will be announced Feb. 2 of that year.

a year too late for The Dark Knight.
They have a hard enough time wading through the crap that has become the motion picture industry to come up with five movies for nomination, and now they want to expand it to ten? Or is this another example of a "let's not keep score so the other team that didn't win won't feel bad" scheme so that more people will get the chance to be nominated? Either way, it's idiotic, and it will make what was already a blisteringly-long awards ceremony even longer.
Hell, maybe next year, they can nominate "Best Person Who Grabbed the Last Canape From the Crafts Services Table Before Clean-Up" awards, just to make those people fell better about themselves.
"Feel better," not "fell better." Typing while ****ed, bad idea. :P
I will be sure to be out of the galaxy on that date, cat.
Off hand I think it would be better if there were ten shows in each of the major categories at the Emmys than ten Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. Most of us can think of ten dramas or ten comedies for "Outstanding Drama series" or "Outstanding Comedy series" while I am sometimes hard pressed to come up with five let alone ten nominees for Best Picture.
...more like a year too late for The Wrestler!
anyway, they should have SIX movies in the Best Picture category. and that is a scientically-based conclusion!
I'm still confused why "Slum Dog Millionaire" won... It was kinda sucky.
Why not split the category into 5 depressing film and 5 suicidal depressing films.
Now the show can be 5 hours long, opposed to the insufferable 3.
