'Mad Men' gets August premiere date
AMC has announced the third-season premiere of "Mad Men," and as expected the Emmy-winning drama will return in mid-August.
The new season will kick off at 10 p.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 16, with an episode that features limited commercial interruptions. The cable channel will run a marathon of season two on Monday, Aug. 10, and both seasons will also be available on demand over the summer.
The show began production in early May, at which time Twitter-fueled rumors of an Aug. 16 premiere date surfaced. Jared Harris ("Fringe," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") has joined the cast as Sterling Cooper's financial officer, but as has been the case throughout the show's run, details about this season's story lines are hard to come by.
Last season ended with Sterling Cooper about to merge with a British ad agency in 1962. Whether the story picks up from that point or jumps ahead in time, as happened between the first and second seasons, remains to be seen.
The show's core cast, including Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Elisabeth Moss, January Jones and Christina Hendricks, should all be back for the new season.

I read somewhere that the plan for each season is to move ahead two years. If that's a true statement from the producers, I like it. I am glad there was a two-year gap between S1 & S2; I would not want twenty episodes just in a single year for this show and these characters. With limited episodes per season - which is a good idea for this show - to see these characters change as the Sixties progress and changed America is fantastic.
Last season ended just around the time of the Cuban missile crisis -- October 1962. So they're one year away from the JFK ******ination. I wouldn't want them to jump past that point, but to include it, and maybe to begin right on the day it happens. Now, that would really kick things off! Or, they were only about 15 months from the Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan. This should be a dynamic season, as the sixties as we know it really begin to take hold.
