Upfront chatter: 'Eastwick' looking good, 'AbFab' less so

Rebeccaromijn_290 A somewhat clearer picture of the new shows likely to wind up on your TV screen -- and what won't -- is starting to emerge ahead of next week's upfronts.

The latest speculation in the trades and online has started coalescing around a few shows at each network: ABC once again looks like it will pick up more series than anyone else, while FOX is being more selective, CBS is looking for its usual mix and The CW closing in on a couple dramas. Here's a network-by-network rundown (we're leaving NBC out, since it's likely not to add many more new shows when it announces its schedule on Tuesday).

ABC

Already ordered: "Flash Forward" and "Modern Family"

Contenders: "Eastwick," the takeoff on John Updike's "Witches of Eastwick" starring Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jaime Ray Newman, seems like a good fit with the network's other female-skewing dramas. The network is also high on the Jerry Bruckheimer crime show "The Forgotten" and the small-town mystery "Happy Town." "Cougar Town" with Courteney Cox remains hot on the comedy side, and "The Law," starring Cedric the Entertainer, is getting some traction now as well.

Others: The Shonda Rhimes-produced TV news drama "Inside the Box," "V" and "Empire State" are "in the mix" -- i.e., not dead but hardly sure things -- along with comedies "The Middle" (starring Patricia Heaton) and "Romantically Challenged" (Alyssa Milano and Eric Christian Olsen).

CBS

Contenders: Not much new from the network most disciplined about keeping leaks to a minimum. The "NCIS" spinoff is a virtual lock, and "The Good Wife" (Julianna Margulies) and "Three Rivers" (Alex O'Loughlin) have pretty good buzz too. On the comedy side, "Accidentally on Purpose" (Jenna Elfman) still looks strong, with "Waiting to Die" and "Happiness Isn't Everything" also in the lead pack.

FOX

Already ordered: "Human Target" and "Sons of Tucson"

Contenders: The comedy "Brothers," starring ex-NFL star Michael Strahan as an ex-NFL star and Darryl "Chill" Mitchell as his brother, is gaining steam. "Past Life," a drama about people who investigate reincarnation, has its supporters too, and "Masterwork" could be a midseason show.

Dead: The once-hot "Absolutely Fabulous" remake looks like it's done, along with "Two Dollar Beer" and the drama "Eva Adams."

The CW

Contenders: "Melrose Place" hasn't officially been picked up yet, but it's pretty much a sure thing. "Vampire Diaries" would fall into that category too.

Others: "Life Unexpected" (previously called "Light Years") and "Beautiful Life" may be competing for one spot along with bubble show "Privileged." The Hollywood Reporter says the "Gossip Girl" spinoff might be a midseason option.

Only on CW (and perhaps NBC) would a complete bomb like Privileged even be "on the bubble".

CW has lost 40% of its audience the past two years and Dawn Ostroff's solution is 'more of the same".

Les Moonves needs to take this network over personally if he is interested in keeping it afloat.

The CW needs more shows like Smallville and Supernatural (which are the highest rated shows on that network after Top Model and the only shows I watch on the network) especially since both those shows may be in their final season next year.

Funny how CW is the lowest rated of all five networks, but is the one network everyone still wants to talk about on the boards. I have to agree with the deranged Rena on one point: more of the same is not the answer. However, I'm sure Moonves is pulling the strings (he wouldn't give a woman control over anything) and the execs are focused on ad income from teen girl products.

It's just stupid, though, to limit yourself to such a slim and ever-shrinking audience, when a little diversity would bring new viewers and new products to advertise. Isn't that Sales 101? Les, who cares if CW takes a few of CBS's viewers. The money stays in the family either way. C'mon, help a sister-network out, bro.

Why, once again, is there no mention of The Body Politic? That's one of the CW's pilots too (and the only one who's script actually had potential and wasn't more of the same), and yet no one is reporting on it. A nice mention that "it's dead" or "there's no word yet" or "it's being saved for midseason" would be nice.

Laur - None of the reports I've seen this week have mentioned "The Body Politic," which usually means bad news at this stage of the game. I thought the show sounded promising too, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Thanks, Rick. I did just read one report that seemed to suggest midseason and another that said the producers want to keep things quiet. I guess we'll find out next week.

It's weird--I really haven't watched either Fox or The CW this year, and yet those are the two networks I'm most interested in for upfronts.

What's the story about the Forgotten - why has it become the frontrunner? The script did not appear to be that good.

I am rooting for "Three Rivers" and the gorgeous, super-talented Alex O'Loughlin.

They need to pick up all of the drama's since they need to have a full Mid-Season anyways instead of one show like this year and two craptastic reality shows this summer the CW is putting on the air. They need to divide the season up so if they have a bomb on their hands they can have another show in waiting and have plenty of time to garner buzz. So I say pick them all up and pick up shows that still have a strong female in them but have some strong male presence as well. Basically they need to redo the networks mandate and skew to more then just girls since none of them really watch that network as much as the networks wants. ABC family out does the CW for pete's sake!

Definitely CBS must choose "Three Rivers" with Alex O'Loughlin, after taking a year removed from the Tv by the unjust cancellation of Moonlight, all the Alex's fans we deserve to see him again in a big project like this one, so that it could demonstrate all his talent and qualities as big actor and gorgeous man.
