Reports: ABC takes 10 new shows for 2009-10

Courteneycox_290 After a relatively quiet upfront last year following the writers strike, ABC is returning to its let's-order-a-ton-of-new-shows M.O. this year.

The network makes the official announcement of its 2009-10 schedule on Tuesday, and based on reports from the Hollywood trade papers, it's going to be a busy one. Ten shows -- six dramas and four comedies -- will join the lineup for next season.

The four new comedies will join returnees "Scrubs" and "Better Off Ted" -- and possibly "Samantha Who?," which like a lot of veteran shows is the subject of negotiations to make it cheaper next season -- and represent ABC's biggest commitment to half-hour comedy in several years. Three of the shows -- the previously announced "Modern Family," Courteney Cox's "Cougar Town" and "The Middle," starring Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn -- are single-camera, while the Kelsey Grammer-led "Hank" is a traditional, multiple-camera and live-audience show.

ABC is also the backup home for "The New Adventures of Old Christine" should CBS decide not to pick it up -- although it's looking like the show will stay put.

The dramas are a mix of high-concept, mythology-laden shows ("Flash Forward" and the mystery "Happy Town"), character-driven pieces ("Witches of Eastwick" update "Eastwick" and the legal dramedy "The Deep End") and one crime procedural, Jerry Bruckheimer's "The Forgotten." The sixth drama is "V," which Variety says could air as a close-ended "event series" (i.e., one season and done) at midseason.

I look forward to Happy Town. Wish ABC would revisit some shows they let go too soon like October Road.

The rest of the shows don't sound like anything I would watch.

I wish ABC would pick up King of the Hill after FOX stupidly decided to cancel it.

Better Off Ted and Castle renewed. Further proof that today's viewers prefer CRAP over QUALITY. Networks cater to the dumb viewers. I'll stick with the cable channels.

Better Off the Air is more like it!

The decision to make SW and Scrubs multi-cam is a really smart decision as its going to work more in syndication value than it would have in single-cam.

Better Off Ted is the best new comedy since 30 Rock premiered

Which says a lot about the state of what's considered good comedy nowadays.

V for one season would be a waste of a good character on lost

I love Better Off Ted and Castle. So what if I want something a little frivolous after spending my day at the nursing home.

The lineup of ABC shows for 2009 has been announced. Some of the subject matter the shows will highlight clearly displays the country's current preoccupation with the recession. The lineup has breadth and depth, with some shows having dramatic subjects. At least one show will be about the recession, as the namesakes of the show, the Heck family from Indiana, weathers economic turmoil and installment loans. Also will be Cougar Town, about a south Florida town that revolves around the high school football team and a preponderance of aesthetically pleasant divorced 30 and 40 something women. (You know what we mean.) Since its all regular network, you won't need debt relief to catch the ABC fall lineup 2009.
