Prop 8 decision: Ellen Degeneres still married, but not happy
Gay marriage isn't cool in California ... unless you slipped in the ceremony before the election.
On Tuesday, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in the state, reports the LA Times.
This measure, passed by a close vote during the November elections, overturned a May 2008 ruling by the California Supreme Court that had made it constitutional for same-sex couples to get hitched in the state.
Thousands took advantage of the ruling at the time -- including celebrities Ellen DeGeneres marrying fellow actress Portia de Rossi and "Star Trek's" George Takei wedding his longtime partner.
The new ruling means that those marriages won't be invalidated, but new same-sex marriages will not be legal. The subject of gay marriage has been a hot-button topic for a while and was recently revived when Miss California Carrie Prejean spoke out against it in answer to a pageant question.
For more details on what the Prop. 8 decision means, check out the LA Times.
What do you think of the new ruling?

Great ruling. Now they need to put a new measure on the ballot to invalidate the current gay marriages. We owe it to our children and future generations. A good day, but even better ones are ahead.
If you're stuck in the gay life, just remember, you can get out. You have so much potential. Stop the war against yourself.
I am getting pretty fed up with Ellen's political antics. She is a wonderful entertainer. She should stick to entertaining. Please deep six her personal agenda.
Jacob- I hope you are being sarcastic. If so, it isn't obvious. If not, I won't feed the troll.
This is a sad day for many people. I think that those fighting marriage equality need to recognize that the sanctity of marriage has been eroding for the past 50 years and it has nothing to do with gay marriage. In fact, allowing gays to marry will most likely improve said sanctity. And, think of all of the money to be made: http://tinyurl.com/5qj7sz
Good idea on not feeding the trolls - let them go back to their Fox News. As for political antics? Also how is wanting to get married to your partner (either man or woman) an "antic"? Seems like a basic human right to me, gay or straight.
I propose Prop 8 1/2. Ban on divorce. If these bible thumpers want it so bad, let em' have it. They use their religion to preach hate and intolerance and use only the parts of the Bible that they feel like using. It isn't Gays that are destroying society. It appears to be the Heterosexuals who are running everything.
PS. To Jacob. Um. You can't really change being gay. Not a choice there buddy. If it was, you yourself would have had to wanted to have sex w/ a man and chose not to. See how that works? So be sure to let everyone know you wanted to have sex with a man but chose not to.
Blah.
Californians voted. The judges pushed their own agenda in direct contradiction to the people. The marriages should have never been allowed at that point. Californians voted, AGAIN. The activists rioted and tried to overrule the majority through the judges again. Thankfully, the vote stands. Unfortunately, the questionable interim marriages weren't dissolved.
Ellen is an overrated and unfunny entertainer who uses her television "comedy" program to selfishly promote her own political views without regard to those with differing opinions. Maybe she and her girl friend should just leave California.
I wish people who say they oppose gay marriage because of the bible, would start following the bible even more closely. Which means, no women working outside of the house (according to the bible, women are only to care for their husband's needs), and no more sex-for-pleasure (since the bible says that sex is only intended for procreation).
And that's just for starters.
So come on, people, don't be hypocrites -- start following that book to the letter!
"I am getting pretty fed up with Ellen's political antics."
yeah, why do you call this "antics?" (as AC also pointed out)....
All I can say how ignorant most of these statements are here. Being Gay is not something that can be changed, it is not a lifestyle, it something you are born being. I know many hetrosexual marriages that have failed, what gives the right of this country and most religious groups to feel this way. No one is hurting anyone. Love is for all to share and commitment should not be limited to one sector of the population.
