NBC picks up 'Medium' ... or not
UPDATE: The earlier reports weren't entirely accurate. "Medium" remains in contention for 2009-10, but its renewal is not yet official. It could be one of the pickups when NBC announces the rest of its slate for next season on May 19.
NBC hasn't put out any official word on its 2009-10 lineup yet, but the pieces are starting to fill in -- with the latest one being the renewal of the veteran drama "Medium."
Details are a little bit sketchy on the show's sixth season, but reports say NBC is ordering something less than a typical full season. The series is likely to get between 13 and 18 episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The "Medium" pickup follows on the heels of NBC renewing its rookie cop series "Southland" late last week. Another new show, "Parks and Recreation," is expected to join them when NBC makes its schedule announcement Monday afternoon.
The trade papes are still saying, meanwhile, that "Chuck" fans may be kept in suspense for a week or two while NBC makes a decision on its on-the-fence shows. Dsicussions with studios about renewals are primarily focused on budgets and license fees in anticipation of a weak upfront ad market.
NBC is also reportedly stocking up on dramas for midseason as a hedge against Jay Leno's prime-time show faring poorly in the fall.

***NBC is also reportedly stocking up on dramas for midseason as a hedge against Jay Leno's prime-time show faring poorly in the fall.***
Probably a smart move on NBC's part. The best part about the Tonight Show w/Jay Leno and that I most looked forward to hearing is his monologue; it's really really funny. Also like the Jay Walking segments - those are pretty hilarious. If the viewer is already watching a 10 pm show on another network and is committed to watching that show at 10 pm and even though they like Jay Leno but just when he's on at 11:35 pm, don't think they opt to watch Jay 10 pm nitely instead. It could be that Jay will do well at 10 pm certain nights and not so well other nights depending on the viewer's loyalty to another network show at 10 pm. Also in this era of DVRs, TiVo's, and even catching your favorite show over the Internet (nbc.com, abc.com, cbs.com, etc.) later in the week, has eroded the initial ratings for a show. However it could be that the networks are factoring in those viewers too. There's still advertising when you watch a show via the network's website, hulu, fancast. etc. I don't necessarily dislike commercials or do I fast forward through them b/c they are what make the shows we watch possible. Though I recognize that some commercials are just very entertaining while others can be just plain annoying and grates on your last nerve.
The production cost on Medium and Southland (freshman show) is probably not as high as Chuck's and definitely not Heroes', the reason Medium and Southland are getting an early p*** with their current ratings. But NBC, c'mon already and give Chuck a Season 3; work it out.
Chuck's gotta get another season! After the way this season ended it would be a crime to kill it. Please help save Chuck at SaveChuckBartowski.com
Yeah for Medium. Love it!
With Leno at 10 five nights a week, that guarantees NBC behind almost every network in that time slot. Can't see why an advertiser would waste money on a 10:00 talk show. Against what CBS has at ten, no one will be watching.
I love Medium. Hooray.
The new Leno show will fail. They should know it will fail. Just like ABC should have known Cavemen would fail. As for Chuck???? Besides a hot chic on it I can't get into it. I've tried and tried, but can't. Thank God they renewed Southland. I think its a mistake to put Leno on at 10pm over Southland. NBC will see it F'd up again soon.
To be honest, I don't see the appeal of 'Medium' or 'Southland'.
I gave this show a shot, and was bored to tears. As for 'Southland', the over the top "gritty" trailers just turned me off to the show altogether.
I'm happy for the shows' fans, but if these are the dramas that NBC is rolling out next season, then I'll be spending a lot of time watching cable.
I LOVE MEDIUM AND HOPE THE SHOW LAST ON. IT IS ONE OF THE BETTER FAMILY SHOWS.
Medium is the only one of their decent shows right now whereas everything else on there is just outright crap!
Medium is a great show. Love to watch it!
