'Gossip Girl's' Chace Crawford to play Kevin Bacon part in 'Footloose'
"Gossip Girl" wrapped its season last night, but star Chace Crawford has a busy summer of work ahead of him, as he's reportedly just landed the lead role of Ren McCormack in Paramount's "Footloose" remake.
According to Us Weekly, the studio confirmed Crawford's casting earlier today, though the official announcement won't come until tomorrow morning.
The role of Ren -- originally portrayed by Kevin Bacon, of course -- was first offered to "High School Musical" star Zac Efron who passed on the project because he's hoping to branch out of the singing/dancing genre.
Which, speaking of, I guess this means we're gonna see Nate Archibald channeling his inner "So You Think You Can Dance" champion?

Oh, and sidenote, according to E! Online, Miley Cyrus is now in contention for the Ariel Moore leading lady role, though her schedule is seemingly booked solid. Other actresses interested? Hayden Panettiere and Amanda Bynes. "Dancing with the Stars" champ Julianne Hough has also auditioned.
I can't really see any of these girls in the part. Other ideas?

I think that either Kristen Stewart, Ellen Paige, Willa Holland or Megan Fox. Provided any of them can dance!

so i think that it's an absolute disgrace chace is playing ren instead of derek hough. the role was tailor made for derek. but if it is official then what can we do? i just hope that the studio reconsiders their choice because i think they've made a terrible mistake and i'm sure a body double is going to be needed to do all of the amazing dancing for this film (derek wouldn't have needed a double because he's already AMAZING!!)
but i also can't see any of those contenders in the role of ariel... miley is too young to star opposite chace... not that chace is old it just wouldn't look right because well miley looks YOUNG, amanda bynes while i love her to death (she' an amazing actress and has a great sense of humor and comedic timing) i just don't think she has a strong enough singing voice to pull off a lead in a musical, hayden has a decent voice and i think she can dance i mean she was in bring it on and she kind of just looks like a dancer, while julianne is well equipt in dancing i don't like her voice for a musical i mean i know she's a "country singer" but i'm from the south and she's got nothing on real country artists... her voice is just really nasally and it just always sounds like she's singing out of her nose... plus i'm bitter about derek not getting the role... let's just say i wanted a certain hough in the film and is WAS NOT julianne PLUS i think she looks a bit too old ( i know she's only like 21 but i just think she looks too mature for the role)
now on to who i think would do a good job for the role of ariel:
Kristen Bell - she would be amazing!!! she has a musical theater backround. ever heard her sing??? AMAZING VOICE!!!
Emily van Camp - I have no idea if she can sing but she was a trained ballerina so she can dance!!
Savannah Outen - she is pretty much unknown and i think she's only about 16 or 17 but if miley is being considered than why not Savannah look her up on youtube she has a fantastic voice and does covers of songs by Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, etc and puts those girls to shame with her knockout vocals plus she's an amazing guitar player PLUS she can dance!
my other option - find a NEW person!!! i mean that's what they did for hairspray and hello we have nikki blonsky and james marsdon.
sometimes the way to find the perfect person for the role is to search everywhere!!! hold nationwide auditions...check youtube... check myspace... do everything you can to find the right person!!!

Anyone that has seen the original knows that the characters are in high school. Its a musical in that there is music and dancing. There is NO singing to speak of so singing ability is unimportant unless they are changing the script significantly from the original. (Yeah I'm directing that at you tennis chik.) Chace is completely believable as a high schooler IMO and is masculine enough to pull off the Ren role. It remains to be seen if he has the dancing skills. Derek Hough is one of the homeliest guys I've ever seen and his moves are effeminate. He would be completely unbelievable in the fight scenes. The thought of him as Ren is a complete turnoff. Miley Cirus is absolutely too young for the role and couldn't carry off the sexiness of it. Julieanne is too old looking though she is a great dancer.
I think they're doing a remake of the musical Footloose, not the movie. So, singing ability is definitely needed.
Julianne would b the perfect pick. She can sing, dance n act.
She could even choreo. some parts.
PUT LACEY SCHWIMMER IN IT... OK I JUST HAVE A THING FOR HER
NO! No! No! I think Chace does not have the skills and will be awful in this movie. So much for watching this movie.
