'Doctor Who' specials land at BBC America
The long-awaited "Doctor Who" specials, David Tennant's last hurrah as the Time Lord, will finally arrive on U.S. shores this summer. It's about time.
BBC America announced that they acquired five new "Doctor Who" specials -- four of Tennant's final adventures in addition to the 2008 Christmas special "The Next Doctor," starring David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan, which will air Saturday, June 27. As fans might recall, "The Next Doctor" acted as sort of a decoy to the announcement that Matt Smith would actually be the 11th Doctor after Tennant.
July will see the premiere of "Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead," in which the Doctor (Tennant) is forced to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina ("Bionic Woman's" Michelle Ryan) when a London red bus takes a detour to an alien planet that's teeming with secrets and is being fast-approached by the deadly Swarm.
"The outstanding quality of the 'Doctor Who' scripts from Russell T. Davies and the on-screen dynamic that David Tennant brings to the role are a magic combination for our viewers," says President, BBC Worldwide America Garth Ancier. "We're thrilled to bring this iconic show to BBC America, home of the best British sci-fi programming on television."
Take that, Sci Fi Channel, or SyFy or whatever you're calling yourself these days.
"Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars" and the other two as-yet untitled specials will premiere later in 2009 and early 2010.
Are you psyched?

I can't wait to see what kind of chemistry David Tennant and Michelle Ryan have together.
Yay! for BBCA! Thanks for the rest of this series of Doctor Who with David Tennant. I wish he was staying but it should be interesting to see the current and new "Doctor" play out.
That is great news; now if only BBC America can get their act together and get BBC America HD running in time for the rest of Doctor Who & the new Torchwood in July(and hopefully my satellite provider, Dish Network, will pick up the BBC America HD once it is on air)...
Having already seen both (thanks, YouTube!), The Next Doctor is the superior special. Planet of the Dead plays more like a normal episode, but there is an important hint for future specials.
Re: Katie
They have great chemistry together. I won't say any more without spoiling.
I first started watching Doctor Who last summer (and only seen the first season with Rose and Martha), so David Tennant IS the Doctor to me and I hate that he is leaving the franchise. It's the same way that William Shatner will always be James Kirk (screw the new Star Trek movie and the crappy alternate universe it's set in).
Doesn't Sci-Fi eventually show most of BBC's sci-fi anyway?
wow Michelle Ryan was a funtastic companion, but just once, and what happened to the hype of a female Doctor!!! robbery I say, bring back the Bionic Woman or put Michelle in a golden girdle, oh I know, give her an Alias kind of show with new locales and costumes each week, but cast her as Captain Nemo, and each week she starts the episode emerging from the sea in a skimpy wet bikini!!!!! Oh what I would give to be a media mogul and make it so! The Nautilus starring Michelle Ryan, I love it, tell the world, thanks Kristaps
As long as they don't make Ryan run in high heels every week!
Tennant is the only Dr. Who who struck my fancy and I have watched all of his episodes available on either BBC America or SciFi Channel. The others never really interested me very much. I hope the new guy isn't a turn off for some reason to me. In the meantime I plan to enjoy what's left of David Tennant's reign as The Doctor.
