'Desperate Housewives': What happened to the familiar face we were promised?
It was exactly one month ago today that "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry met up with the press at The Paley Festival and announced that a major character from the series' first two seasons would return in the last five minutes of yesterday's finale for a huge surprise.
But if you watched last night's two-hour season ender, you know that said surprise never came.
So what happened?
Well, a couple things.
First of all, we know that Jesse Metcalfe (Gabrielle's teenaged gardener/lover, John, from season one) filmed scenes for "Desperate" in March and those scenes clearly didn't make the cut. But insiders say the big surprise guest wasn't supposed to be gardener boy anyway.
My guess? Someone we used to know was going to show up in the mental institution where our friend Dave Williams just retired to.
Paul or Zach Young perhaps?
Well, either way, whatever was planned didn't end up happening. ABC is staying tight-lipped, not commenting on the storyline we were promised and saying simply that Metcalfe was never confirmed as a guest star. But insiders tell me that what Marc had originally intended to do -- whether it involved gardener boy, one of the Youngs or another familiar face of the past -- just didn't work well with the rest of the finale, so it was never filmed.
No doubt we'll eventually get to the bottom of this.
But, in the meantime, any thoughts?

Korbi - thanks for following up on this as I was peeved at last night's finale. I watched Neal McDonough on the View talking about the season finale and essentially he said we were not going to be disappointed. He also said he didn't know if his character was going to be killed off as was usually the case in the past when the mystery arc character was axed. I am ****ed and wondering if I should return next season.
Korbi - what are your thoughts and/or hopes that Kathryn Joosten and Lily Tomlin will get that spinoff?
As long as it's not one of the Applewhites...
The season finale was LAME!!! Like we'd believe that MJ or Susan were ever in danger! A show that submits itself to the Emmy's as a comedy would never kill a cute little kid. Plus Hatcher ain't going nowhere and they already did the coma and blinded thing.
Dave should have died. Edie's death was due to him. That end shot of him in the mental institution was a laugh out loud rip-off of bad Batman movie's Arkham Asylum.
I would guess Nic filmed that little hallucination scene way back during her last days on set originally?
OMIGAWD Lynette preggers again with twins???? HOW LAME that this is the best they can come up with for Tom and Lynette. Marc Cherry should watch all the many seasons of KNOTS LANDING and see that Mac and Karen remained faithful and married and had many adventures without more children (the Meg thing non-withstanding but that was well done). At this point Lynette and Tom are the Mac and Karen and to break them would be an outrage to fans.
The "Who Did Mike Marry" thing was pretty lame but maybe effective. I thought it was clearly Susan. My roommate thought it was clearly Katherine as do others I've talked/tweeted with. Having Susan and Mike happily married would be a challenge for Marc Cherry because again clearly he thinks babies are the only thing for long term married people to have plotlines over.
LAME!!
Korbi - don't mean to continue harping on this but you say "My guess? Someone we used to know was going to show up in the mental institution where our friend Dave Williams just retired to." I could totally have seen that scenario working... but which character? Oh well, I am going to let it go *sigh*
**Kellek** - ditto "Lynette preggers" I could have upchuck when I heard that... LAME!
**Kellek** I loved Knots Landing and thanks for mentioning...MARC CHERRY ARE YOU READING ...
Christopher, I know right? I know everybody says "oh you can't have two characters get together that the fans want together" because then there would be no tension. Whatever! That is lazy writing. Mack (misspelled it earlier) and Karen proved a married couple could have plenty of tension and plotlines without being apart. So even getting Susan and Mike together could work. Susan is such a clutz she can get mixed up in all kinds of crazy things that she needs rescued from by Mike and I'd love it!
Changed my URL link to my Twitter account since my blog is pretty lame itself. Just saying ; )
Wasn't the familiar face that nurse at the end?? The one taking care of Dave in the institution?? I thought that was Felicia Tillman???
Re Mike's newest bride...I think it's pretty obv Susan. Which means it will probably be Katherine. (whose character I no longer enjoy...)
Though, I wonder why Carl would be shown at the wedding if it were Katherine?
