A 'Buffy' movie without Joss Whedon? It could happen
The good news is, the executive producers of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" are considering making a movie that would relaunch the franchise. The bad news is, they haven't involved creator Joss Whedon in the discussions.
Take your pick as which side outweighs the other.
The discussions are in a pretty early stage, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, "Buffy" rights holders Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui are talking with production company Vertigo Entertainment ("The Grudge," "The Lake House") about rebooting the franchise, apparently taking seriously the notion of a slayer being born into each generation.
The catch: Whedon, who created the character for a 1992 movie and re-imagined it for what would become one of the more fanatically loved TV series of the past couple of decades, isn't involved at all, at least not yet. The HR says the Kuzuis and Vertigo principals Roy Lee and Doug Davison are talking with writers and "do not rule out" Whedon's involvement, but they've not yet "reached out" to him.
Whedon is about to head into the second season of "Dollhouse" for FOX and also co-wrote horror flick "Cabin in the Woods," which is due for release early next year.
Fran Rubel Kuzui bought Whedon's "Buffy" movie script and ended up directing the movie that starred Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, while her husband arranged financing for the movie and was one of its producers. They were also executive producers of the TV series that cemented "Buffy's" place in pop culture.
So what do you think? Is a "Buffy" movie without Joss Whedon really a "Buffy" movie at all?

Um, no, 1000 times NO! What is point without involving Whedon. That's like Terminator without Cameron, and we all know how that has turned out.
I agree with Dean. What more is there to be said.
Wow, absolutely not. Perhaps this might work if some of the writers from either of the TV series' were involved. But it'd be a million times better with Whedon and some/all of the TV show cast.
As I understand it the Kuzui's were listed as Exec Producers of every episode of Angel. But they had absolutely zero involvement past funding the original Buffy script.
Rebooting might work for long-dead franchises like Star Trek, but don't try and reboot something that doesn't need reinventing.
If Whedon is not involved, then absolutely not.
Did you know that Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui were credited in every single episode YET THEY DID NOTHING.
It is a known fact that they continue to get paid royalties, and were paid for each episode -- yet they contributed absolutely nothing to the series or the spin-off, Angel.
They made money off a magnificent series based on their failed movie -- not fair!!
If Whedon is not involved, then a stake should be put into this project.

And let the SF geek meltdown commence.
Only thing puzzling is I thought Whedon owned Buffy. So how can they do a movie without involving him?
All that said, remembering that the cast of the original TV show are now some 15 years away from the age range of the original high-school characters, when Buffy comes back they will need to recast in order to remain true to the original concept. And remembering there was a Buffy movie years before the TV series, this wouldn't be the first time.

I cannot even express in words how much I hate the Kazuis for this. I hope this fails. Even if they brought Whedon in, would it be any good without Gellar? And there's no way she's coming back. Maybe if they brought in Whedon and focused on a different slayer. Ugh...they're just trying to continue to cash in on something they had nothing to do with. Bastards.
Buffy without Joss?? Never. While Joss has successfully compiled a cadre of writers who can respectfully play in his sandbox, he is still the omnipresent guiding force. The Kuzuis are delusional. Under their inept guidance, we would be subjected to AnnaLynne McCord the Vampire Slayer and her prom date, Zac Efron.
In Whedon I trust. Over the years I have spent an embarr***ing amount of money in the name of fandom. The Kuzuis couldn't pry the ten bucks for a movie ticket from my fingers.
