VIDEO: Frankie Avalon on 'American Idol'
Judging by the Google Trends rankings since "American Idol" aired Wednesday night, a lot of people who watch the show went scurrying to their computers to figure out who the heck Frankie Avalon is.
It's understandable. A pretty good-sized portion of the "Idol" audience, after all, was not alive when Avalon was crooning hits like "Venus" -- which he sang on "Idol's" results show -- and making beach movies with Annette Funicello.
The 69-year-old singer's appearance on "American Idol" was prompted by this week's songs-from-your-birth-year theme, and it helped host Ryan Seacrest point out the fact that Simon Cowell will be 50 later this year. (Cowell tried to insist he was born in 1969 rather than 1959, but no one was buying it.) It also presumably gave some of the kids watching the show to ask their parents or grandparents -- or Google -- who Avalon is.
Here's the video of his "Idol" appearance.
