'United States of Tara' wraps up Sunday with reconciliations & revelations

Unitedstatesoftara We've watched Buck beat up Tara's daughter's boyfriend, we've seen T make out with Tara's son's crush, witnessed Gimme wet Tara's parent's bed and Alice pretend she's pregnant by Tara's husband.

But with all the insanity that went down this season, it wasn't Tara's wacko alters that really kept us entertained. What held my attention was the characters dealing with those alters. When you look at "United States of Tara," don't you see a family show more than anything else? A contemporary, current family just trying to figure out who they are.

And while we'll learn a little bit more about the alters this week, it's really the movement concerning the fully-realized characters that's important, including Tara.

If you watched last Sunday, you know that she has decided to confront her boarding school rapist, the person who's been long blamed for the onset of her Dissociative Identity Disorder. So of course, we do meet the dude (along with his super annoying wife) this week and what we learn about Tara's disease because of that meeting is major. Why is she the way she is? We won't get all the answers -- there's a second season still to come -- but there will be a major reveal.

As for Marshall, he will gain a bit more understanding about why his mother's alters act the way they do. Once Marshall absorbs Kate's point that T only took advantage of Jason to protect him from future pain, his resentment fades. Sweet and supportive Marshall will resurface this week, which is nice, seeing as how Kate's manipulative side will flare up.

With her parents away and her chaperone Aunt Charmaine busy romancing her perfect new boyfriend (which, p.s., we have not seen the last of Patton Oswalt's Neil), Kate will simultaneously crack you up and piss you off with her sorry attempt to blackmail Barnabeez into compensating her for the whole Gene stalker situation. Oh and, by the way, stalker Gene is just getting started...

So, tell me, are you still into "United States of Tara"? And if so, why? Will you watch this weekend?

I believe the big reveal will be that the alters (or at least some of them) were there before the rape at boarding school. The onset of DID is almost always triggered by incident that happened as a child so I think whatever happened to Tara happened earlier on in her childhood.

I also love the relationship between Marshall and Max - what a great father/gay son role model!

you can watch the season finale now, its already on OnDemand. I watched it last night and it was really good!

I like this show because of the great cast. Rosemary DeWitt and Toni Collette have the most realistic sibling relationship on television. The scenes with many actors are so good on this show - the best being the dinner with the parents. Having Pamela Reed and Fred Ward as the parents only made it sweeter.

How long is "Gene" going to be around? Isn't he the brother of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Molly Parker's characters in the eagerly anticipated new HBO show?

This is my favorite show of the season. I agree with BHM1304 in that the sister relationship is spot-on, but so is the marriage. I know that if I were her husband, I would try to be the "cowboy" and fix the problem rather than just standing by.

Can't wait for Sunday night (I'll wait to watch it in HD instead of watching it OnDemand).

I agree Korbi, once I accepted it was a family show with a twist and not "Juno: The Series with Alters." I started enjoying it much more. It hasn't been as witty as often (it has some great lines though), but it has had a great heart and some wonderful accepting family members of each others peculiarities. Most family shows the tension is over trying to maintain a "normal" family life - on TARA it is about making the most of the situation they are in - normality be damned - and they end up a kitchen table, or bowling, or doing normal family things with a gay son, a growing up too soon daughter, or whoever Tara is at the moment despite themselves. Each alter is given a place in the family as well. So yeah, I agree. LOL

I've already seen it. Superb. Can't wait for season 2.

I'm not going to spoil it for everyone, but I didn't see what was coming, coming.... but, um.... some people do, it seems, so good for them! I just like being shocked for once :)

Toni Collette is the new Meryl Streep. Quite frankly, her transitions and her ability able to play up to three different personalities in the same scene (when she was with charmaine at the spa) makes her a truly fine actor. Give her an Emmy!

OMG! I can't wait for Monday!

Due to the age difference, isn't the issue at hand statutory rape, rather than sexual har***ment? I was expecting the Barnabeez honchos to take this much more seriously, considering the company could technically be found complicit in the endangerment of a minor. Kate's 15, right? How the hell is that not statutory rape?
