'Slumdog Millionaire' child not for sale, claims father
"Slumdog Millionaire" child star Rubina Ali does not have a price tag on her, despite a report that claims her father has put the 9-year-old up for adoption for $300,000.
The story is merely a "lie made up by foreign journalists playing games with me," claims the dad, Rafiq Qureshi, to People. His second wife and Rubina herself support his statement.
"I trust my father. He loves me. He has never said that he wants to give me up," says the girl, who played the youngest version of Latika in "Slumdog."
An earlier report by News of the World had claimed that their reporters had posed as wealthy folks wanting to adopt Rubina and had even met Qureshi and his brother Moiuddin late at night at a Mumbai hotel to discuss the transaction. The story goes on to claim that the uncle had asked for a higher price than previously quoted since "The child is special now. This is an Oscar child!"
"Slumdog Millionaire" won eight Oscars, including the best picture award in February.
