R.I.P. 'Reaper'?

Raywise_reaper_s2_240 Hear that? That's the last nail getting hammered into "Reaper's" coffin.

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, the creators and exec producers of The CW's "Reaper," have signed a seven-figure, two-year deal with 20th Century Fox TV, which calls for them to leave the supernatural dramedy that's been on the bubble for renewal in its second season.

It's not really surprising news. Korbi TV already mentioned that the future looked grim for "Reaper," and it was previously announced that Tyler Labine, who plays wacky pal Sock on the show, has signed on to star in a FOX pilot.

It's a shame really, since the show is good and the ratings for "Reaper" were higher than the much ballyhooed return of "90210" last week. Hope springs eternal of course, but mainly for rabid fans who don't want to let go.

In the meantime, check out the clip of Tuesday's episode, "Underbelly," in which The Devil (Ray Wise) encourages Sam (Bret Harrison) to take the gang on a road trip with him and Sock has to deal with the sleeping arrangements with his hot stepsister (Eriko Tamura).

Many of the shows that have cancelled during the course of this tv season have had higher ratings than episodes of 90210. Doesn't surprise me.

All CW shows have bad ratings, so beating 90210 is really not all that significant.

A good example of what is wrong with today's studios is that it makes no sense to give a rich deal to creators of a show that essentially bombed.

What is FOX afraid of? That those creators will come up with another bomb for a different studio?

Now I'm not saying you should never work again unless you have a hit. What I am saying is that Hollywood richly rewards people who have just failed in the marketplace, which is completely insane economically.

The cancellation of Reaper makes me sick - so much rubbish on TV gets renewed every season no questions asked - a show outside the box like Reaper has to prove itself week after week - now even the creators, producers and one of the stars have betrayed it! I enjoy the show and will be sorry to see it go. I thought it was funnier than ever this season.

What's with these stupid shows like 90210 and The Hills, Gossip Girl, etc that go on and on and on...and yet the good shows get cancelled?

"What I am saying is that Hollywood richly rewards people who have just failed in the marketplace, which is completely insane economically."....

yeah like Wall Street does and most of big corporation america too....

anyway, i will greatly miss Reaper, it is one funny and entertaining show!!

I am sure THECW must have had a contract with the creators? CW cant let them go that easily if CW needed them...

and i think no amount of saying "so many rubbish shows get picked up but not the good ones" is going to change the channel's mind.. all they want is profit..

While this doesn't look good for our show, you can still let the CW know you want Reaper to continue even without them.

Please don't stay silent. They'll never know how much you'd like Reaper to stay if you never tell them. Tom Spezialy's still around, and lots of shows do just fine even after a change in the guards.

Since snail mail campaigns work best, here's the address for Dawn Ostroff at the CW:

Reaper was the only decent show on the CW. At least now I don't have to bother with the network at all.

I say good riddance. I used to be a fan of this show, but the start to this season was bad. I can't stand Sock, and his little crush on his "sister" was just annoying.

Either way, I have "Chuck" to (hopefully) fulfill the spot of show about a slacker who begrudgingly works at a job he was thrust into through no fault of his own while his annoying best friend weighs him down. And "Chuck" has Yvonne Strahovski.

You just contradicted yourself. You said: Every show on the CW bombs. Which is true. But then you blame the show for bombing on the creators when, according to you, the CW is to blame. I like your logic missy!

Reaper doesn't fit the demo of the CW: young girls who spend money on worthless designer crap they see famous people wear on TV and in movies.

The CW also never promoted the show like it did with every other new series because they had no clue on how to market it and where to put it.

Having said that:
The only shows on the CW that are doing "well" are the shows that already existed on The WB: Smallville, Supernatural, and One Tree Hill. They had a built-in fan base.
Every new show including Gossip Girl get crap ratings. Last season, Reaper did consistently better than Gossip Girl in overall ratings numbers. The only reason why Gossip Girl is doing slightly better then Reaper this year is because of better marketing and the fact that Reaper was brought back mid-season... and it's a fact that mid-season shows don't bring in big numbers on any network since most people are invested in other shows on other networks.

Fox clearly sees potential with Butters and Fazekas. They get the highest ratings out of any network. I trust in their opinion more then I trust yours. You probably flip burgers when you not typing on your computer. If I need advice how to defrost already cooked ground beef, I'll ask you.
