Obama on 'The Tonight Show': History of a sort (video)

Barackobama_240 NBC made sure we knew that President Obama would be making history when he sat down with Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" Thursday. Small history, maybe, but history nonetheless.

The late-night institution has been a regular stop for presidential candidates for some time now, but Obama's Thursday appearance marked the first time a sitting president had appeared on the show. Host Jay Leno didn't exactly have the long knives out for his guest, LA Times TV critic Robert Lloyd notes, but Leno did play the "aggrieved everyman" in asking the president to discuss the current political storm over bonuses paid to executives at bailed-out insurance giant AIG.

Lloyd also notes that the interview may become noteworthy for an attempted joke on the president's part, when he compared his famously unimpressive bowling skills to the Special Olympics.

We'll post video of Obama's "Tonight Show" appearance when it becomes available Friday. You can also read Lloyd's complete take on the interview at LATimes.com.

Here's the full interview; if the embed isn't working, you can also watch it on Hulu.

seems like Obama would be a night show guest since he's so good at rolling with the punches

Will you listen to this?

We finally have a president who speaks in whole sentences, and he doesn't make funny faces when he's trying to think.

You mean he's really NOT like someone in the "Special Olympics?" Nice. Guess he didn't have the teleprompter handy, huh?

Shame on you Mr. President. You better make a nice friendly donation to Special Olympics International or a local Area Office. Better make a call to Eunice Kennedy Shriver. And to think Special Olympics really started in your town of Chicago!!!

Obama is an abomination of the office of president. What a hack and disgrace to our nation.

This ******* is in love with himself and the celebrity - he has no business being president. America would be better off if he would partner with Spike Lee and make movies.

If he doesn't like all the security that American taxpayers slave to pay for, then lets just stop the gravy train for him - no ambulance, no caboose, no dog sled, no submarine. LET HIM WALK - without secret service. What an ungrateful ***.

He needs to quit prefacing everything with "hey, I inherited this," or, "this was already on the plate". Just TRY to be a President and stop the inuendos to the previous administrations. Agree, he is an *******.

WHAT HAS HE DONE FOR US SO FAR? I WOULD LOVE TO GET FACE TO FACE AND ASK HIM IF HE WOULD HAVE MADE THAT COMMENT IF ONE OF HIS CHILDREN WAS IN A WHEEL CHAIR AND WAS NEVER GOING TO BE ABLE TO WALK OR TO TALK CORRECTLY. IT REALLY SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME KNOWING HE IS THE PERSON WHO IS GOING TO GET US OUT OF THE TROUBLE WE ARE IN. I HOPE I AM ALIVE TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. OUR ECONOMY IS SO BAD AND THIS IDIOT, IS OUT AND ABOUT BOWLING AND GOING ON JAY LENO. WHAT A JOKE, I KNEW IT BEFORE HE GOT ELECTED, WE ARE SCREWED. I REALLY HOPE HE RESIGNS, AND SO DO MILLIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE.

It was a good show. Pres. Obama apologized for his comment to the Shrivers before the show ever aired. Good grief, he was not putting down disabled people, just commenting that he wasn't good at bowling. Get over yourselves, Repubs, you'll wear yourselves out whining for the next four to eight years. Get over it. Bush screwed us over for eight years and Obama has the huge task of getting us out of Bush's mess.
