'Breaking Bad' breaks back on Sunday

Bryancranston_breakingbad_s2_240 One of my regrets from the last TV season was that I let AMC's Breaking Bad fall off my radar after a couple of episodes. Fortunately, there's a chance to rectify that starting Sunday.

The show, for which Bryan Cranston won an Emmy last year, is relatively easy to pick up: Chemistry teacher Walter White (Cranston) has discovered he has terminal lung cancer, and in order to make enough to provide for his family, he teams up with a small-time dealer named Jesse (Aaron Paul) and starts cooking meth. His expertise allows him to produce some of the purest stuff on the market, which makes him a tidy sum but also gets him tied up with an unhinged dealer named Tuco (Raymond Cruz).

Oh, and Walt's brother-in-law (Dean Norris) is a DEA agent who's more than a little interested in whoever it is who's producing the new product. And did we mention his wife (Anna Gunn) is about to have a baby?

Sunday's premiere, which Cranston also directed, finds Walt calculating that he needs to do 11 more deals to make the $737,000 he figures his family will need after he's gone. He and Jesse also fear that Tuco is looking to take them out and hit on a way to get to him first.

Cranston, bald and gaunt-looking as the chemo-affected Walt, absolutely proves how deserving he was of the Emmy last year, and the show mixes in some nice moments of dark comedy with what is essentially a tragic story. The season pass is getting set this time. (The LA Times has more on season two.)

Below is a one-minute recap of the first season of Breaking Bad. More expansive summaries of all seven of last season's episodes, the full pilot episode and some sneak peeks at the coming season are at AMCTV.com.

thrilled! one of the best shows on tv, so glad it's back....

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS. I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS BUT IT'S AMAZING, SUCH GREAT ACTING AND AWESOME EPISODES EVERY TIME! ITS ABOUT TIME IT GETS TO THE NEXT SEASON

Best show on TV since HBO's masterpieces(Sopranos etc.)!!

OMG! I missed this show 1st time around, couldnt find when it was on, so watched the repeat of season 1 last nite!!!! I AM SO GLAD I did that! this is the best acted show Ive ever seen! its not even like t.v., its like watching a neighbor, or a relative or something!? every single person in this is dead on w/their character. Not one misstep! Jesse couldnt be more realistic if he actually was a tweaker! I am so glad I got to this, & I hope more people start watching, cause its just too damn good to miss!!! I thinks its almost better than the Sopranos, cause the Sopranos, being criminals, were supposed to be bigger than life, & they were, but BRian Cranston & the cast are supposed to be ordinary people, which they are, but their reactions to extraordinary cir***stances is heart wrenching! the expressions on Brian Cranstons face say a thousand things, at once..amazing show!

Really good show. I'm glad i watched the 1st 7 episodes last year. I'm sure we're gonna get a sence of what is cost's to be a drug dealer this season as well as the impact is has on his family. Although 737K would be nice. Cable is the place to go for good tv. Huge fan of Don Draper as well. Keep the great serialized drama's coming.

WOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Along with Bryan Cranston, I think Aaron Paul and Raymond Cruz both deserve emmys for their excellent performances. They aren't the lead, but their performances are every bit as believable and compelling as Cranston's Walter White. It would be a great injustice to both those fine actors if they didn't win some kind of award for their work on this wonderful series.

Big kudos to AMC for my two favorite shows: Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Can't wait for next week's episode.
