Breaking: ABC Cancels 'Life on Mars'

Michaelimperioli Life on Mars -- my police drama with personality -- will make a premature exit, ending its first season with a series finale sometime this April, E.P. Josh Appelbaum confirms to me.

ABC apparently told producers that the party's over at the 125 earlier today. Well, I mean, I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea. The good news is, because the alphabet net is giving the LoM team a little advanced notice on their eviction, the writers will be able to pen a finale that ties up all of the series' loose ends.

Still, I'll be sorry to see Sam Tyler and crew go. Can we talk about this?

Excuse my vocabulary. But seriously, this sucks.

WTF?!?!? God forbid that the gen pop should actually use their brains. This show was top flight but I guess the sheeple are just too dense. Sad, but all I can think of is Idiocracy. Lowest common denominator to the extreme. I give up on broadcast TV.

Haven't we seen this played out before: A promising show starts building up a following and -- it suddenly goes on hiatus. But when the show returns, much of the audience has forgotten the show, moved on, and ratings dive. In the future, I wish the nets would let their new shows run w/o the hiatus and really build a loyal audience.

Too bad, I liked LoM. At least ABC will allow the producers to wrap the show up and give us some closure.

Bummer. First Pushing Daisies, now Life on Mars. ABC clearly sucks.

Yes it is great they get to wrap up the story and really that is the problem with questing shows - if they are not successful like LOST or BSG you never get a resolution. Some of these shows with heavy concepts should end after a season and let viewers know it will air in its entirety. Then spinoff or start another quest with the same cast perhaps? Like the telanovelas - have a definite end point. Problem is networks ditch shows too soon and leave others on for too long when they are hits. Some sort of middle ground might be good for networks and viewers. The BBC did this show for one "series" or season and then followed up with a woman trapped in the 80's so maybe we can get that next season? LOL

Damn.

What more can one say?

Okay, I can't let it go that easily -- for once again a rare good show is cancelled while the m***es keep watching the endless drivel.

But, as a previous poster pointed out, some of the blame lies with ABC's idiotic tendancy to put new shows on hiatus for months, and then change the time and day of broadcast on top of it!

Alas, I'm afraid many of my fellow LOST fans have to take some of the blame for this, as their incessant whining about the number of reruns during the show's second season is a major cause of ABC's hiatus policy the last couple of years.

Hiatuses (haiti?) may be okay for extremely well-established shows such as LOST, but is death for shows in their first season. You'd think the ABC promo monkeys would have realized this by now, what with all of the shows they've had to cancel before this.

I bet if they reran the entire season of LIFE ON MARS in the late spring and summer the ratings would be sufficient to justify its renewal.

Life on Mars was great. Wait, I have to clarify that; the British version of Life on Mars was great. The ABC version was just a bad retread of the BBC version.

Do yourselves a favor and watch the BBC version. It was only 16 episodes over 2 seasons, and it was pretty much just the right length. The characters were better, the...well, everything was better. I gave up on the ABC version after three episodes.

Chazzzer = snob

I'm really sick and tired of people telling me how GREAT the BBC version was and how the American version paled in comparison. I like what I like, and I LOVE Jason O'Mara and the rest of the cast of this show. I am very sad.
