Tyrabanks_americasnexttopmodel_s12_240 The "America's Next Top Model" open-call auditions in New York on Saturday (March 14) brought a whole new meaning to the word "fierce" when the casting descended into chaos highlighted by bitter fights, a dangerous stampede and three arrests, reports The New York Times.

Thousands of hopefuls waiting in a line outside Midtown Manhattan's Park Central Hotel were already grumpy and tired from standing in stilettos for hours on end when someone suddenly shouted that a nearby overheated and smoking car was on fire and about to explode.

Panic caused people to scream, push and trample each other. In the end, three people --  Michael Edwards, 24; Vanessa Quinones, 20; and Clem Clemmons, 40 -- were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and inciting a riot. Two people were treated for minor injuries at a nearby medical center, and four more refused medical attention for their injuries.

To make matters worse, the auditions were eventually canceled, dashing the hopes of the model wannabes who were only able to try out for this 13th cycle because "Top Model" is specifically looking for shorter models -- 5'7" and under. These shorter women rarely measure up to their taller counterparts and find landing jobs difficult.

The CW network was "working and cooperating with local authorities."

The 12th cycle of "America's Next Top Model," featuring taller contenders, currently airs on Wednesday nights on The CW. Check out their first two photo shoots -- Fun and Games and Makeovers & Lighting.

hard to believe that anyone would get this worked up to be on an CBS or NBC show.

would any other network be justified to be acting 5th grader then??

johnd, care to stop trolling? Especially since CBS has 2 of the best shows on TV period (The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men).

I was there and I could not believe the chaos and the lack of order and care from the top model organization.

I stood outside in the freezing cold from 8:00am until 7:30 almost 8pm. I waited in a line that circled the entire block. It was the longest block I have and will ever walk. From the beginning there was no order, just thousands of other women with the same application that said to meet at an address that was not where it was said to be.

I hadn't slept in 24hours preparing for the audition I hadn't eaten a thing Thirsty, extremely in need of a bathroom and my energy running on the hopes that I could be "America's next top model."

Finally I am 3/4 of the way there and I can see the door but the line is only moving 3 inches every 45mins. I am in a place of anger yet knowing the other girls around me were suffering the same cold weather, the same dreams, and the same physical pain and endurance, I was given some comfort.

We even became Friends and worked as a unit to keep each other warm. I was thinking when did this become an episode of Survivor?
Now to the Chaos The line went from one wide side walk to a very wide city street in width around 12pm There was a car that had hit a barricade and was over heating there was smoke filling the air and then next thing we hear is " it's going to explosed, it's on Fire! I am closest to the wall and was smashed into it. All of us on top of one another.

There was no way to get out or move so I tried to slip down so if it blew I would have a better change of not getting my hair mess up or my head blown off. Then the cops tried to calm us down saying its not going to blow, easier said then done especially with some random strangers hands on your behind and you can't tell who's legs are who's.

as we are still crushed by the pressure from the thousand of girls in front and behind us, even more chaos broke out when a man runs into the crowd where he pulls out some young girl and starts to beat her, as the cops come to get him he charges back into the crowd saying he has a gun and we heard something that sound like gunshot but that could not be confirmed. that is where it got even worst everyone running in to each other trying to get away from danger.

I was now not being smashed against the wall but between people. It was like playing a game of life and death twister. I had moved a lot not even using my legs, my feet were no longer on the ground. I was being propel forward by force. my ribs and lungs were being crushed and I started to lose consciousness and could not breath. There was a girl on top of me who started to have a seizure and or was hyperventilating I had to pull myself together so I could help her.

When they say you want to be on top I had no idea this is what they meant. after we had finally broke free the police said it is over go home. I became furious. How could they do this to us!

*First we come out here with them not giving us any order or communication about whats going on

*Second we stand in the freezing cold on a Sa****ay for hours and for some days.

*Third those that were there waiting for these hours and days were cut in line from people that showed up late and formed their own line, not to mention they got in.

*fourth and most importantly our lives were in dangered and our dreams shattered.

Fifth we were treated like animals no food, no water, no bathroom, no order and no one to care.

After everything was said and done we could not even get an apology, a thank you for coming out, an explanation, a sorry you came wasted your time and almost died as well as your dreams being scattered on the streets of NYC along with your belongings.

It was another slap in the face. I Lauren Amaris was checked out by ambulance but chose not to go to hospital, due to I can not afford it. I am at home recovering with bruises, swelling, I am still walking with a limp due to the trauma my legs experience, I am having back pains and possible whiplash.

I will be ok, but what's not ok is the lack of care that was shown for the people that came out to be apart of this great opportunity. I love Tyra Banks and what she stands for and the traumatizing experience that occurred this past Sa****ay March 14th 2009, I pray her and her team Right this wrong.

TJ Spyke, for sure they're going to do something to make up on this incident. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time that it'd happened on America's Next Top Model auditions.

I wish you luck and hope to see you on TV soon ; D

I was there Sat. March 14th. My Niece Ke Ke Rachel and I came all the way from Boston, MA. I hope they right this wrong. It was terrible, there was no organization AT ALL! I had to when I got there first find out where they were letting the girls in which was the left side entrance. The two lines in front were not even told that they were not letting people in the front AT ALL. I brought my niece to the side and got in line. We arrived at 7:30AM and she was able to get in the door @ 8:45AM. Although there was no organization I'm glad she got in. She came back up stairs about 11:00AM and we went back to the Hotel to check out. I hope she has a chance to at least to get called back after all that chaos. I felt bad for some people that camped out all night not to get anywhere because of lack of organization. The security guards were rude and insulting and in my opinion made things worse by telling people in the crowd to move back in which was impossible with hundreds of people behind you pushing forward. I love you Tyra but I hope you find out who is resposible for this total mess. I know you didn't want anyone being hurt for a chance to be on your show. I believe you will do the right thing. Your fan from Beantown Stephanie Dennis.

I loved the video of all this craziness so much, I blogged about it too: http://squareeyes.blinkx.com/?p=445

I'm really into the fact that it was the 5'7" crew as opposed to the usual amazons who went nuts. Those li'l ladies are scrappy!

I was camped outside with my hopeful friend on FRIDAY, the 13th at 10pm and she wasn't seen until 6pm SA****AY! So all you b*tches complaining that you got there at 7am, be quiet!

We camped out and were probably the 50th person in line but all the people like "warcraft gold" that formed their own line cut off everyone and were seen in just one hour.

The initial stampeded started at 7:30am and my poor friend was rushed in by the crowd where we couldn't give her any food, water, NOTHING! Us friends were luckily able to go to our car for warmth and get a bite, but for her, she couldn't even go to the bathroom. There she is, in line, standing since 7:30am and finally got inside at 5:30pm. Mind you, we saw aquaintances that got there at 1pm, standing well behind her that had come and gone.

I blame Tyra! She should have known all these hood rat b*tches were going to come out looking for a way out the hood and being all ghetto.

The police FINALLY barricaded the area around 1pm. Mind you, the auditions were supposed to end at 3pm. Logic?????

hi i love the fact that people from the height 5'7 nd under got a chance. As for all the drama to go down the way it did March 14 it was not called for and there r people who did not get a chance and was wondering if there stil a chance to audition
