Reminder: Noah Wyle's back in the 'ER' Thursday
Mark Greene, David Morgenstern and Elizabeth Corday have already made a last trip through the ER this season, and now it's John Carter's turn.
Thursday (Feb. 19) marks the return of Noah Wyle to the show, where he'll guest-star on several episodes to help close out the series' 15-year run. NBC isn't being very forthcoming about how or why Carter, whom Wyle played for the show's first 11 seasons, returns to County General -- the network's episode description only says that "Dr. Carter makes a surprise return to the ER." Which isn't telling you anything you don't already know.
When we last saw Carter on the show, in 2006, he was working with a relief organization in the Darfur region of Sudan. (The story line was part of a guest arc Wyle did after leaving the show as a regular the previous season.) Descriptions of the next few weeks' episodes hint that he'll try to go back to work at County General.
The show's farewell tour has already featured guest spots from Anthony Edwards (Greene), who made an appearance in flashbacks in a November episode; Alex Kingston (Corday), who popped up in January; and William H. Macy (Morgenstern), who guested on the two most recent episodes -- the second of which was directed by former regular Eriq La Salle.
Before the series is over, fans can also expect to see George Clooney (Doug Ross) and Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) one last time. Long-time orderly Jerry (Abraham Benrubi) has also popped up a few times this season.
I missed Kingston's appearance, but I thought the show handled Edwards' and Macy's returns pretty well. And given that Wyle's final turn on ER has been planned all along, there's no reason to expect anything different.
Are you looking forward to Wyle's return? How about Clooney and Margulies?

I have loved watching the re-appearances of Dr. Greene, Dr. Corday and Dr. Morgenstern. Would loved to have seen Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq LaSalle) back in front of the camera too; he did the opening of the episode that paid homage to Michael Crichton after he p***ed - that was special. I am anxiously awaiting Dr. Carter's return as well as Dr. Ross's and Nurse Hathaway. I have loved ER all these 15 years. I don't think the writing and the production quality had diminished or gone to seed after 15 years. I believe the show still hits its target demographic but of course not as strong and large as in the early days when the show was at the height of its popularity with ratings in the 20 millions or so. ER was appointment TV for me and still is. Like a close friend, will stand by til the end. Thank you ER for being there.
Yes, absolutely, I am looking foward to the return of Dr. Carter to ER. I have also loved seeing Dr. Greene, Dr. Corday, and Dr. Morgenstern being back in the ER. Would have loved to have seen Dr. Peter Benton back in front of the camera; but kudos to Eric LaSalle's directing and him paying homage to Michael Crichton not soon after Michael's p***ing. I will be in high heaven when I get to see Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway back on ER. I have loved Abraham Benrubi's reappearance on the show; it was done nicely. Furthermore, I have loved ER all these 15 years. I believe the show still hits its target demographic today but of course not as strong and large as in the early years when the show was at the heights of its popularity - bringing in 20 million plus ratings. I believe the writing and production quality has not waned over the years. ER was and still is appointment TV for me. Like a close friend, I will stand by til the very end. Thank you ER for being there.
How could I have left out Dr. Weaver's (Laura Innes) and Paul McCrane's (Dr. Romano) recent reappearance. Yes wonderful to have them back on ER. As for Sherry Stringfield's Dr. Susan Lewis, I would have loved it if somehow she managed to reprise her role; not to mention Gloria Ruben. These actors and characters are all very dear to me. I will miss ER but it will live on in re-runs. Thank you.
YES!!! Mostly for Doug and Carol. They were SO HOT back in the day!
It has already been reported that Sherry Stringfield will be reprising her role as Dr. Lewis before the end of the show.
Gloria Ruben did an episode last year
Morgenstern was in 2 episodes? I must have missed the second appearance...
Rumor has it Carter is back at least partly due to a health problem.
I thought the Morgenstern episode was the worst of the bunch--very contrived to expect the audience or the cast to care about the old doctor no one knew. Emotional ending was way too forced. Looking forward to Wyle, Clooney, and Margulies.
I have to disagree about the Morgenstern episode.
Does anybody know if Noah Wyle's character is supposed to be killed off? I have a horrible feeling that he is. And if he does I am going to be so upset, but I'm not so sure. I've watched every single episode of this show and I don't think I'll be able to take that. I'll be crying like a baby.
