'Lost': Why the Others stay in "Place"

Terryoquinn_lost_s5_240

OK, a lot of you Lost fans have asked me over the past few weeks, "Why don't The Others move in step with Locke and Company? I'm confused!" And I never answered the questions, because I didn't have the slightest idea, either. I don't like to blindly make things up, and I'm more than happy to say when I'm stumped. But, finally, a muse struck me today. Or should I say, the band Muse struck me today.

If you don't know the band Muse, you're no longer my friend. OK, kidding, but they are my favorite band right now so I listen to them all the time on my iPod. And while I've listened to their song "Knights of Cydonia" roughly 3 million times, the following line never stuck out until my way into work today:

Don't waste your time
Or time will...waste...you...

Here's the most excellent video for this most excellent song.

Let's set aside the fact that the chorus sounds like a rallying cry for the Oceanic 6 for now and think about the lines in question. Don't they sound as if they are referring to the Lostaways on the Island? Time is literally wasting them: it's not wiping them out per say, but it's definitely killing them. So how comeThe Others are immune from this effect? Because they are not fools.

And remember what the message embedded inside the Room 23 video says: only fools are enslaved by time and space.

So this is why The Others don't travel: Room 23 not only conditions them mentally for life as an Other, but physically as well. The IV drip, the crazy glasses, the sensory overload...all designed to prevent nosebleeds should the donkey wheel ever got turned.

It's not the soundest theory in the world, but it's the first one I've had on the topic, so I thought I'd drop it on you while giving you space to comment during tonight's episode, "This Place is Death." Plus, it gave me the chance to share Muse with you, and that's always a groovy thing in my book.

I like this theory Ryan. It actually makes a lot of sense and answers 2 questions with one stone. Question 1-why are the Others not jumping with the Lostaways? and Questio 2-what the hell was Room 23 all about?

Like I said, I like your theory.....the song and video are another story though

First things first. I'm finally all caught up!! It took a (fake) sick day, but what seems like 70 hours later, Ive rendezvoused here in Season 5 with the rest of you.

As for your theory, Ryan. I think it makes total sense. Room 23 has to be used for something, and after watching that video, your explanation is completely possible. BTW, I forgot how totally scary Room 23 was. Whew. Now I need to go clear my mind. So with the hour I have left before the show starts, I feel like going to go play some Guitar Hero. That Knights in Cydonia song is one of my favorites to play on that game!

But what about Juliet? She was an "Other", but she's jumping. . . ??

Two thoughts about Juliet: 1) she never went in the room, or 2) her "branding" in "SiaSL" somehow marked her as different.

Ryan, I agree that Room 23 gives an explanation of "only fools are enslaved by time" but, I believe the room is used more of a control/punishment device and and does NOT lead one to the opposite of a fool which is true knowledge. Also room 23 is a relative new electronic device where Truth(knowledge) has been around since the tribe of the 4 toes.

To me the Temple would contain the answers we all seek.

Room 23 also contains a great insight for the end game "God loves you, God LOVED Jacob".

I remember saying that the only thing I could think of to explain it would be if there were some crazy initiation for the Others which keeps them put in time.

As far as the specifics, yeppers, this stuff all sounds pretty good... or as good as anything else we have no idea about, lol.

I had a theory that these people are skipping because somehow their future was altered due to the Oceanic 6 leaving...and now the island...fate...destiny...whatever you want to call it...is having trouble finding where they 'belong' so to speak, unlike the other ppl who have lived and died on the island, whose fates are unaltered.

Remember those injections the others were taking? Well, what if those provided the immunity to the time skipping side effects? The only problem with this theory seems to be Juliet, but she I believe stopped taking the injections in Season 3 telling Jack she didn't even think they did anything. Just a thought...if this is the case though I want my credit! haha

Ryan,
you're a genius.

Love the band, been a fan of them for a while now. Also dig your theory.
