Will There Be An X-Files 3?
Last weekend in Los Angeles, the group "Inspired by Gillian" hosted a Q&A with former X-Files executive producer/writer Frank
Spotnitz and a screening of the first two movies, all to benefit the organization Neurofibromatosis, Inc.
KTV correspondent and obsessive X-phile Marisa Roffman was front and center as Frank candidly spoke about the Mulder/Scully kiss that could have been, as well as whether or not we're getting another X-Files movie. Read on for her report...
Chances are, if you're an X-Files fan, you heard about the alternate hallway scene that was included on the Blu-ray edition of the first movie, X-Files: Fight the Future. Frank received the biggest audience reaction of the day when he revealed that there are actually more alternate takes -- in which Mulder and Scully kiss!! -- that have yet to be leaked. Um, say what? How did TPTB manage to keep that quiet for 10 years? "The amazing thing to me is that they get out, ever," Frank said. "They're supposed to be under wraps. In fact, there was a blooper reel that was on the internet for Fight the Future and the studios didn't understand where those dailies came from because they'd supposedly never been printed. It didn't surprise me at all that [the kiss scenes] hadn't gotten out because they were supposed to be kept secret."
So were any of those takes actually ever intended to be included in the movie instead of the aborted kiss? Said Spotnitz, "The big debate when the kiss was filmed was whether [Mulder and Scully] should actually touch lips before the bee stung her or not. So in that [alternate] take right there, nobody ever called cut, so they just continued the way they did. There are other takes where they actually do kiss and the bee sting happens [after]." That sound you just heard? A million fangirls squee-ing.
As far as DVD sales go, while the official numbers haven't been released yet, I've been hearing reports from fans that it's been sold out in their local stores, so that seems to be a step in the right direction for a third movie.

Hell Yes, I would be for a 3rd X-Files movie. And I didn't mind that I Want To Believe wasn't mythology based, because it was just good to get back into the characters and have a nice season 3 style episode. Besides, nothing much is going to happen mythology wise until 2012 when the aliens will arrive and the world as we know it will end unless there is a 3rd movie and Mulder and Scully save the day!
While I was not impressed with it in theatres, I found that "I Want to Believe" really grew on me the second time (on DVD, Blu Ray to be precise). I'd be very excited for another X-Files movie, even one as low-key as "Believe." The Blu Ray presentation, incidentally, is beautiful.
If the 3rd movie got back to the show's larger mythology, I'd be all for it. Where IWTB suffered was the fact that it felt like an episode of the TV show, it didn't have the scope of a movie. There were episodes of the show that felt more like movies than IWTB. "Triangle" off the top of my head.
I really liked I Want To Believe, it was an intelligent thriller and it was wonderful to see Scully and Mulder again. I would love to see a 3rd film, it would be great if it concentrated on the mythology side of X-Files but if it didn't I'ld still go and see it. I pre-ordered my DVD from Amazon and am still waiting to get it but I can't wait to watch it again.
yes, i would go see it if a 3rd x files movie came out. the 2nd movie, was different but i loved it, and even though it was not part of the show or the first movie, i still loved it, and will always love and enjoy the movies if they want to keep producing them. it was good to see some of the charaters back on screen, and i hope to see more. so, i say hell yes, i would love to see more x files movies made.
I finally saw I Want to Believe last weekend and I really liked it. I went into watching it with an open mind because I had heard both good and bad. I watched X-Files all 9 seasons that it was on and really missed it when it left the air. It was good to see Mulder and Scully again and I think I Want to Believe was a good reintroduction to the pair.
I loved The X-Files: I Want to Believe, and I want so badly for a third X-Files movie. I know Chris Carter will be able to take the event of December 22, 2012, and turn it into a masterpiece about alien colonization. It felt great to see Mulder and Scully again after 6 long years, so even if you're an X-Phile who didn't like I Want to Believe so much because you anticipated a plot about the mythology, you should've loved just to see Mulder and Scully again. Worldwide, I believe that I Want to Believe was a success, so why not make a third X-Files movie? So I am 100% for a third movie about the mythology. But when they make the third movie, I think they should get many of the main characters from the show back, like Kirsch, possibly a clone of the Cigarette Smoking Man, the return of Doggett and Reyes and what happened to them, and a bigger part for Skinner.
Glad to hear so many of you loved IWTB like I did (and I agree, it gets better with each viewing, be it on the big screen or small). I think an XF3 movie based on 2012 is needed, not only because I want Mulder/Scully back on the big screen, but because the series so clearly set up for that.
OK, I'll be the naysayer.
Just last night I rented I Want To Believe on Blu-Ray and watched it with my 14 year old son. We never watched the TV series but we both thoroughly enjoyed Fight the Future.
About the best I can say for IWTB is that it was OK. Compared to FTF the effects were VERY underwhelming and even the suspense was sorely lacking. Honestly, for whatever reason it just didn't seem as well written and the effects didn't come close to making up for it. I didn't feel like I'd wasted my time, but it left me at most wanting to watch FTF again. I could watch FTF over and over again, but I doubt I'd ever rent IWTB a second time and certainly wouldn't buy it.
I'd certainly give a third X-Files movie a viewing, and if it were as good as FTF I'd be up for another after that, but if it were as mediocre as IWTB then that would pretty much cure me of wanting to watch any more X-Files movies.
I loved IWTB. It's an adult movie with actual character development, and I'm so grateful that I got that. I think I might have been disappointed had they tried to go back and make a big alien movie rather than this film. I have to admit, it really stayed with me. It certainly sparked a lot of debate among my friends about redemption and about the lengths someone should go to just because they can. Really reminded me of the early seasons of the show.
