Cruise & 'Today:' Tom's top 5 nutty interviews
NBC said
today that Tom Cruise, out hawking his new movie, Valkyrie, will
return to Today on Monday for a sitdown with cohost Matt Lauer.
It could be a memorable rematch. Three years ago, Cruise and Lauer sparred over Scientology, drugs and Brooke Shields' postpartum depression. "Matt ... you're glib," Cruise memorably pronounced at the climax of the smackdown.
Not to be glib about it, but this hasn't been a particularly good year for Cruise. Valkyrie has been subject to repeated delays, and his longtime producing partner Paula Wagner quit as chief of United Artists.
But the actor will have to work hard to top some of his goofier past interviews. Over the past few years, Cruise has redefined our notions of what a top movie star can or should say.
The top five interviews, in ascending order of fun:
5. June 2005: At the London premiere of War of the Worlds, a man posing as a reporter squirts Cruise with water from a prank microphone. Money quote: "I’m here giving you an interview and you do that. … it’s incredibly rude. You’re a jerk.”
4. January 2008: A YouTube interview materializes of Cruise waxing about the joys of Scientology. Money quote: "Being a Scientologist, people are turning to you, so you better know it, you better know it and if you don't, go and learn it, but don't pretend you know it."
3. April 2005: In an extremely tense talk with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Cruise defends his "information tent" for Scientology on the "War of the Worlds" set. Co-interviewee Steven Spielberg is trapped in the line of fire between Cruise and his questioner. Money quote: "I'm a helper. For instance, I myself have helped hundreds of people get off drugs."
2. June 2005: In another German interview, with the photo tabloid Bild, Cruise says that "of course" he believes in aliens. Money quote: "Are you really so arrogant as to believe we are alone in this universe?"
1. May 2005: Visiting Oprah Winfrey's show, Cruise dances around the set and leaps on the sofa to proclaim his happiness over new love Katie Holmes. Money quote: "I like intimacy."

b) A couple of those hilarious quotes, in-context or out, aren't even ridiculous.
c) Why is this garbage on the News page?
And no I'm not Tom Cruise.
Tom | Dec 11, 2008 9:34:56 AM | #wow what is the point of this article, this writer is a tool
hmmm | Dec 11, 2008 9:44:26 AM | #LOL, I thought it was funny looking back on Tommy's inspired life and quotes.
All these Cruise sycophants crawl out of the woodwork when bad press hits... go away.
ROFL | Dec 11, 2008 11:22:47 AM | #Looks like the Scientology trolls found this article right away and felt they needed to defend Cruise's honor.
Xenu | Dec 11, 2008 12:27:37 PM | #Maybe one day soon Tom's alien family will come and take him back home and we can then live in peace.
Jake | Dec 11, 2008 2:06:22 PM | #hey i'm no scientology troller! and honestly, some of those "top 5" moments weren't even that bad. there's probably other life out there in the universe? doesn't sound so out-there to me, ask SETI which has been funded by our own federal govt...
he didn't like to be squirted in the face at some hollywood red carpet event? him and 99% of other celeb's, imagine if they did that to a female? hello...make-up!!
he jumped on a couch? oh boy, how crazy is that?! with everything that is going on in this world, and that is crazy?? c'mon folks. i think tom cruise is mostly just too enthusiastic and earnest for our general pop to accept, and that is a shame because i think we need more of in those qualities in this world and not less! they're certainly not crimes....
p.s. i am not even a particularly big tom cruise fan and i don't care about scientology one way or another. but i do care about people being unfairly portrayed and "picked on"....
dolly | Dec 11, 2008 3:17:58 PM | #Agree with the above post pretty much wholesale (specifically regarding those two quotes, big deal). I mean really, what do people expect him to say when someone squirts water in his face?
I'm no believer in Scientology, but I also think somebody's faith is their own business. If that's what he chooses to believe, good for him. It's not like any religion is based on any type of logic anyway, why should Scientology adhere to it?
Granted, he put himself in the public eye on the issue and he paid for it by being mocked mercilessly. Doesn't change the fact that this 'news' article is just beating a dead horse and trying to make something out of nothing.
He's an uninformed, silly, arrogant, ego=driven has been with a "napoleon" (or short man) complex. I used to love him & his movies, now, before he evens opens his mouth, I know its gonna be clownish, or just embarrassing..So, I dont look for him in interviews anymore, & don't waste time on his sad little movies.

susan | Dec 15, 2008 7:33:21 PM | #Last December 15,Tom Cruise made a comeback interview in Today show to promote his new movie. The famous Mission: Impossible star, Tom Cruise, has set out to repair bad credit among the Matt Lauer fans this morning on the “Today” show. Cruise and Lauer were last seen together about three and a half years ago during a 2004 interview. During the interview, Cruise lashed out at Lauer calling him glib over a discussion about psychiatry. Today the star of the upcoming film “Valkyrie,” which is said to be released during Christmas, is set to bury the hatchet that came crashing down between the two. To read more about the interview, or how to repair bad credit, click here.
