Best (and Worst) Feet Forward on Tonight's 'Friday Night Lights'
Though there's a state championship-qualifying football game and city politics relating to the team in tonight's episode, these two story lines are merely the backdrop for what Friday Night Lights is really about: relationships and character...
With Lyla still living at the Riggins house, since Buddy blew all her college money away, papa Garrity will actually turn to Tim for advice on how to get his daughter back. And Tim -- noticing a marked change in Lyla, who seems to be masking a lot of pain -- is actually open to helping the poor guy out. But more importantly, Riggs is there for Lyla in a way that we've never quite seen before. I think we knew he had it in him, because there's always seemed to be a quiet sensitivity behind all that endearing bravado, but to watch it bubble to the surface is a whole 'nother thing.
As for the older Riggins brother, wedding plans for Billy and Tyra's sister Mindy are underway, and little T is in charge of planning Mindy's bridal shower tonight. She does run into a few problems in the process, but it's nothing the lead singer of Crucifictorious can't fix. Yes, Landry Clarke seems to have quickly forgiven Tyra for her bout of selfishness and she seems to have gained some additional respect for him. There are definitely romantic feelings resurfacing on her part... but those feelings are overshadowed this week by the college admission stress she's battling. And for the first time, we will witness Tyra's mother deliver a one-on-one pep talk that we didn't know she had in her.
Elsewhere in Dillon, another once-irresponsible mommy steps up to the plate as well. With Grandma Saracen's mental health deteriorating and Matt's future looming, Shelby will stand by her son in a way he's never before experienced. It'll take him some getting used to, but it's definitely a good thing.
Of course, with all these sometimes unstable characters putting their best foot forward, we will also see the other side of the coin when J.D. McCoy's dad loses his mind over the kid's saucy new girlfriend, Madison. Is she a distraction from football, showing up on the sidelines of his practice and daring him to disobey his pop? Sure. But J.D.'s always overly attentive father is going to cross a serious line between discipline and, uh, well, it's about to get ugly...

Thanks, Korbi! Can't wait to see it!
I still say this is easily the best show on TV that so many people are missing....
The story lines are good...the acting is great!
Thanks for this. Hope there's some Coach and Mrs.Coach as well tonight.
there is definitely some coach and mrs. coach tonight. mostly surrounding the city redistricting politics... and later, tying into the mccoy storyline as well.
I am loving Tim Riggins this season. Can't get enough.
Thanks for the preview. I can't wait!
Sheralyn, I agree that Riggs is great this year. But what I would like to see is him hanging out at the Taylor house like back in season 2. I liked him being somewhat part of that family and I am waiting on some kind of fatherly conversation with the Coach.
I liked the idea of Riggs being an older bro type to Julie too and we haven't seen any continuity there unfortunately. Then again we got 13 more episodes than I thought we would.
Love this show! Great episode tonight. I was skeptical about Mrs McCoy but it looks like she might step up for her son, well at least I hope so. I liked that there was no Julie in tonight's episode. I'm loving Riggins so much this season. So sad that if there is another season he won't be around because he'll be at college :-(
Allie I also was skeptical about Mrs. McCoy - I hope she follows through.
Great episode tonight, as always.
Thanks for the preview/scoop Korbi!!
This was a fantastic episode. All of the storylines were strong tonight, and the acting top notch as always. As often happens it's hard to pick a fav moment of the ep because there were so many good ones, but I would have to say Timmy Riggins being there for Lyla in such a heartfelt, real way, esp. after a huge win like that in a game he dominated, to see him not only not go out and party like usual but really be there for her in a real way, by showing his love but also calling her out on her pity party, was amazing. Litearlly brought tears to my eye and I found myself putting my hand over my heart I was so touched. Also loved his moments with Buddy in the car. But to see him step up the plate like that with Lyla was so heartwarming, maturing and real. After all, if anyone can relate to feeling like they don't have family but wanting one, it is Riggins. Heartbreaking were the storylines with Matt realizing Grandma needs real help and poor JD experiencing his dad losing his top in a physical way. Captivating and heartwrenching, almost as much as that speech Tyra's mom gave her at the end that I agree Korbi, I didn't know if she'd ever have in her. Was wonderful to have Tyra hear, as well as the way Landry so awkward, but cutely complimented her on trying to improve her scores despite being able to get away on her looks, lol. A GREAT ep in a very strong season. Any scoop on the finale??!! PLEASE!!! Who loses their job, coach or Tami?
