Anthonyedwardser_240Mark Greene is still dead, but Anthony Edwards will resurrect the character one last time during the final season of ER.

NBC announced Thursday (Sept. 4) that Edwards, last seen on ER in the spring of 2002, will reprise his role as Dr. Mark Greene for one episode in the show's forthcoming 15th season. His appearance is scheduled to air Nov. 13.

"We had hoped to bring back some of ER's stars for the final season and think that our loyal fans will enjoy seeing some of the show's most beloved and memorable characters," executive producer John Wells says.

Edwards is the second former regular to agree to a return appearance in the show's final lap. Noah Wyle will be in several episodes.

As for the circumstances of his return, Greene won't be coming back to life. Instead, he'll appear in flashbacks that will help fill in the back story of Dr. Cate Banfield (new cast member Angela Bassett) and her history at County General. NBC also hints at other former cast members appearing in the flashback scenes, though the press release doesn't name any names.

Edwards starred on ER for its first eight seasons, leaving in 2002 with an episode in which Mark died of a brain tumor. The role earned him four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win. He co-starred in Zodiac last year and will appear opposite Uma Thurman and Minnie Driver in the comedy Motherhood, which is due in theaters next year.

Great news. No question that I'll be watching!

Anthony Edwards is my favorite character on ER and I have often wondered if he regrets not sticking with the show for another 6 years. He hasn't made many screen appearances since that time. Glad to see him one more time as Mark Greene.

Sounds great. I can't believe they will be in their last season, so sad.

I don't think he regrets it. When he said he was leaving to spend more time with his children he actually meant it, he wasn't chasing a film career.

Now if they could just get Doug and Carol

Glad to hear Noah Wyle will be in several episodes. In the promos for the first episode, they keep saying a "fan favorite" will die. I thought, "If they kill off Noah right away, I'm not watching!"
Hope they bring back Laura Innes.

It's amazing to me that people still watch this soap opera. If it went off the air five years ago without any hoopla, would anybody have even noticed?
