'Lost': Looking back on Season 1
Gonna keep it short and sweet here today, as yours truly is still mentally recovering from finishing the first leg of the "We Have to Go Back" project started roughly two months ago. We're going to move on
to Season 2 of Lost starting next week, but I'm dedicated this week towards taking stock of everything we've experienced thus far, in order to make better sense of things.
After all, I think it was Socrates who said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Least, I think it was Socrates. (We all know better -- ed. Diana) So let's take this week to catch our breath and look back on Season 1 as a whole. We've going to do that in a few ways.
The first is via my Season 1 retrospective podcast, done as always with my lovely wife. We dropped roughly thirty minutes of Lost goodness for your listening pleasure in this summertime edition, in which we address the following topics:
- Our favorite five episodes of Season 1
- What stood out the most this time around
- What we had missed the least
- How the backgammon scene explains everything
On top of that, Diana CHANGES THE RULES. I know, just like Charles Widmore. But instead of killing Alex, Diana accidentally drops an F bomb. It's kind of hysterical, though I'm providing this as fair
warning in case you're not keen on hearing women swear like sailors. I am, which is why I proposed and stuff to her way back when.
Next, we've updated the Butterworth galleries with Season 1-centric images. For those of you who don't know what the Butterworth galleries are, here's your primer. The new images are currently posted on the
Zap2It's Guide to Lost Facebook group, but should be in-site before you know it.
The third way takes its cue off the podcast's fourth topic. I'll be dropping a two-part entry later in the week that looks at the backgammon scene as instructive both of where the show's been, and where it might be going. Special attention will be given to the pop culture antecedents encoded within Lost, and how it helps explain some of the more confusing elements of the show.
Lastly, and most importantly, I want to re-open "Letters from the Flame" for business. For those of you semi-new to the blog, "Letters" is a recurring feature in which I try to answer your burning Lost questions. So I want to know what Season 1-centric topics are on your mind. You can leave your queries below in the comments simply by prefacing them with a big ol' "WAAAAAAAAAAAALT!" That way, I know it's something you want answered in "Letters." I hope to publish that Thursday, so get your queries in ASAP. To those of the 115 readers that have signed up for the Facebook group but stayed silent on here, I'd love to hear your questions the mostest.
So, leave your "Letters" queries below. In addition, list your person Top 5 eps from Season 1, from 5 - 1. I'm curious to see how our lists all match up, and what the consensus choices are for best episodes.
Ryan also posts every 108 minutes over at Boob Tube Dude, then peruses Zap2It's Guide to Lost Facebook group.

I'm not sure if it was just me, but the podcast kept breaking up. In fact I didn't hear the last 5 minutes at all.
5. Solitary
4. Numbers
3. Walkabout
2. Exodus pt.2
1. Pilot
Ok, Bueller, I'll check out your pod cast.
Klaus Nomi! Klaus Nomi!
I prefer the Socrates quote of "Like sands of the hourgl***, so are the days of our lives."
I'll post my "Greatest Hits" of Lost Season 1 later today.
OK, Ryan, listened to the podcast and, as I've said before, the "toy airplane" thing also was one of the low points in the season. Captain Koons would have been a wonderful addition.
Don't feel bad Mrs. BOTN has more f-bomb slips than yours truly. (especially during child labor, I mean what's the big deal?! (BOTN gets slapped in the back of the head by the Mrs.))
Occurs to me some of you can't hear the podcast from work, so my Top 5:
5) Special
4) Solitary
3) Numbers
2) Raised by Another
1) Walkabout
For the purposes of picking our top 5, I'm couting the Pilot and Exodus pts 1 & 2 as 2 episodes and not 4 separate ones.
5. Pilot
4. Raised by Another
3. Exodus
2. Walkabout
1. Numbers
The toy airplane was probably the stupidest part of this season. I also really hope that everything that is still unresolved from this season comes back. You guys know what I'm talking about, Adam & Eve, Walt's powers, Danielle's inconsistent story, etc.
I also really liked White Rabbit, In Translation, All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues, and Solitary.
1-Walkabout
2-Pilot Part 1
3-Solitaire
4-Raised by Another
5-House of the Rising Sun
I didn't know we were going to be asked this question, so I didn't take notes. I'm going to be prepared for Season 2. SO, since I can't remember which were my favorites (I kind of liked them all), the ones that absolutely stand out in my mind are the beginning (the Pilot) and the end (Exodus)!
Looks like we know Smokey's next targets!

Pay 'em whatever they want!!! I want my LOST back!!!!
I could care less if Kate goes. Jack is central to the story. I have to see how he gets back and what happens to Locke.
I'm with Debra, I've seen them all at least twice this summer alone and, as I've said before, they kind of all roll together into one long "made for TV" movie. The first and 4th seasons are, so far, the best imo.
Bring on season 2!!!!!
Thank you Ryam, I cannot listen to podcasts at work. I'm lucky they haven't shut me down with their evil barracuda firewall on this blog yet...Shhhh don't say anything.
