Katherine Heigl's Emmy self-snub
Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl won't win her second consecutive Emmy this year. She's not even in the running.
Bureaucratic oversight? Agent/assistant/studio/network screwup? Anti-Izzie conspiracy at the TV academy? Nope.
According to the folks over at the awards-obsessed blog The Envelope, Heigl took herself out of the running. Here's why, according to a statement she gave the site:
"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination, and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."
Ouch. If I were a Grey's Anatomy writer, I'd be a little bit peeved right about now.
I suppose you could look at this story in a few different ways: As the defending Emmy winner for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, it's entirely within the realm of possibility that Heigl would have been nominated again regardless of what she did on screen this season. And if she really didn't think she was good enough this year, then fine.
You could also see her statement as a not-so-subtle slap at the Grey's writing staff, which took her character down a path that included an adulterous romance with T.R. Knight's George that divided fans of the show and also had Izzie foundering at work for much of the year.
We're on the record here as not being the biggest fans of Izzie's arc this season, so in some small way we understand where Heigl's coming from. But still -- isn't that the kind of beef you handle behind closed doors, or at least with a more diplomatic public statement?
What do you think of Heigl's stand? Was she dealt a bad hand by the Grey's writers, or should she have strived harder to elevate the material she was given?

I actually applaud Katherine for being so sincere and honest about this issue. She's right- she was not given the material at all this season. Last season she was given much more screen time and a story arc- and she nailed every single scene she was in. I applaud her for realising they can do better and giving the slot to someone else! Bravo Katherine- we need more actors like you in Hollywood
Could it be that she's taking herself out of the running to help focus attention on Chandra Wilson's Miranda Bailey?
I am kind of impressed she did that. Many actors are nominated year after year for subpar work just because of who they are and the shows they work on - it's refreshing to see someone say "Hey, I don't really deserve to be nominated this year"
You handle it behind closed doors. Period. No need to publicize it.
Katherine Heigl is so self-obsessed and just loves to shock and make statements. She is so annoying. Get over yourself. No one cares.
I'm conflicted... part of me feels good about getting her point out there and another part of wishes the producers could smack her wrist with a ruler.
Mainly I feel this way because she's pulled this kind of stuff before - airing dirty laundry of the show in the press over her last salary negotiations. Basically, it worked then - she won the Emmy and got more money, helped TR Knight get more money and helped get Isaiah Washington fired. Arguably, she has even more juice now after starring in a couple successful movies, so why not pull the same stunt again?
I'm kinda into people getting their way, but she could have a touch more tact in how she does it (I guess I prefer behind-the-scenes machinations).
Way to go Katie. This past sub-par season of Grey's Anatomy was not aired behind closed doors. It was aired on weekly TV where the public watched or tried to watch. And issuing a statement as to why she withdrew her name only prevented everyone from speculating. More power to you Katie, there needs to be more like you in Hollywood and less of the no-talent wanna-be's who are portrayed as Superstars when they have always turned out sub-par or less than sub-par entertainment.
I forsee a future plotline on GA where her character falls down an elevator shaft.
I'd fire her in a heartbeat. Personally I think she's a C-level actress at best and this is the act of a self important diva who cares more about herself than anyone else.
I love Katherine Heigl. I love Grey's Anatomy. But this is just too much. Yes, what she did was bold and kind of noble, but people are forgetting that Katherine Heigl is shooting herself in the foot. I love her acting and everything she has done, but to date she has two hit movies, one of which she bashed as well for not being kind to women (Knocked Up). This little stunt could cause Katherine not only her character on the show, but also her inevitable rise to the A-List. This incident should have been done behind closed doors, not to gossip mongers that run those websites.
