'Theory Thursday': Volume 6

Malcolmdavidkelley_lost_240Like many of you, I've been following the story in Find 815, because, well, it's not like I have much of a life or anything. If it's Lost-related, I'm there. Mobisodes? Sure. Alternate-reality games? Why not! Podcasts involving Michael shouting "Waaaaaaaalt!" over and over again? Er, OK, maybe I won't consume EVERYTHING Lost-related.

But one thing really sticks out in this game to me: the obsession with the Sunda Trench. I honestly knew nothing about it before this game, and now, I find myself analyzing every bit of data I can about it. I won't bore you with the details (Lostpedia, as per usual, has it covered), but I want to think about the trench, the submarine, and Oceanic 815, and try to think of a way to locate this Island once and for all.

We've been led on the show to believe that the submarine is the only consistent way to get to and from the Island. But we've also learned that getting to the Island requires one to be unconscious/drugged during the trip. The exact reason for such actions has yet to be revealed, but Alpert tells Juliet that the trip is "pretty intense." However, we've never seen the trip unfold: we have only Alpert and Ethan's word for it, and let's be honest, they aren't the most truthful of fellows.

But thinking about the Sunda Trench, with it's vast deepness, gives a touch of credibility to the validity of their statement. If indeed one must pass through the Sundra Trench to get to the Island, then the pressure of the cabin might induce violent sickness while conscious. Thing is, though, I'm simply not ready to assume that the Island itself is the underworld implied by the word "Abaddon" in the ARG. I think I've taken the word "underworld" a bit too literally.

What I'm coming to suspect is that the word "underworld" refers to a geographical position, but not in the usual terms. Instead, it specifies the location of the Island as a place literally "under the radar," a place outside the scope of our sense, and thus hidden "under" our world itself. And all of this is a way to further hide the complete and utter truth of the matter, which is this:

The Island sits on TOP of the Sunda Trench.

The logic behind this theory goes as such:

The Island does not exist inside/under the trench. I can't possibly come up with a plot that accounts for a false sky without sounding like more of a Lost dork than I already am. And I'm an insanely huge dork. Ockham's Razor wins again: this is too implausible a theory.

The plane was pulled from the sky in our world by a large magnetic anomaly perched atop the Sunda Trench. In other words, it was pulled from our world onto the Island as it flew over while Desmond neglected to push the button, even though neither the passengers nor pilot of Oceanic 815 saw an island below them. I see no contradiction in saying that Oceanic 815 was brought down by an electromagnetic anomaly from an Island that isn't physically on top of the Sunda Trench for all to see because...

The Island doesn't necessarily have to be there right now. And this is the key to the whole endeavor, really, and why time travel is so key to Season 4. The Sunda Trench is rife with volcanic activity...and so is the Island. They share remarkably similar characteristics, both from a geological and meteorological perspective. It would make sense that they exist within the same place...just not the same time.

On the commentary track for "The Man Behind the Curtain," the producers of Lost indicate that the volcano mentioned in the episode is very, very important to the overall story of the show. Is it possible that the Island as we have seen it exists before a major eruption that might have sent the Island itself plummeting into the Sunda Trench centuries, if not millennia, ago? (Anther possible explanation for "underworld.) And if you wanted to find the ideal spot to come up with radical solutions in order to save the word from the Valenzetti Equation, wouldn't such a place be an excellent ground in which to produce results you couldn't in this world?

It's a theory I'm still working through, but I found it compelling enough in my own mind to share with all of you. I'll add more to this as time allows, ideas come, and naturally, as your interest dictates.

So hit me with your best shot: how's my theory sound? Offer support, contradictory theories, and bonbons. Because I sure love me some bonbons.

A theory came to mind while reading your theory. You mentioned Alpert made the trip several times. This leads me to believe that making this trip is keeping him young. Also with the fact that Sam hears an old radio broadcast we are to ascertain that there are time discrepancies occuring all over the Sunda Trench.

Also, I think they are now seeding the theory that Adam & Eve are in fact Amelia and her navigator.

I do think you are on to something about the volcano eruption being an incident that changes the island or maybe even the world forever. Changing the Valenzetti equation here would make a lot of sense.

What do you think the significance of 423 Cheyne Walk is? Do you think it is Penny's address since with it we got her phone #?

I think you are close, but I suspect that deep in the Sunda trench is a portal through space-time, leading to the island. Where-when is it? Don't know. But remember the plans to the looking gl***? It's specifically a hatch, whereas the other are bunkers. What if the sub takes people into the trench, through the portal, and they emerge via the looking gl*** station. Or soemthing like that.

What is your take on the Find 815 scene where Sam Thomas plays with the radio and picks up a broadcast of people searching for Amelia Earhardt? As you know, the broadcast says "today" in it.

Thanks.

Something to add to that is the parallel to the scene where Hurley picks up a radio broadcast on the Island. I believe the song was a standard..something like "Moonlight Serenade". The song was recorded by Glenn Miller in 1939. Amelia Earhardt declared deceased in 1939.....holy s@@@, coincidence, I think not!!

I thought I should mention the following since it relates to your Cloverfield & Lost theory:

From DarkUFO's blog:

"The KROQ-FM morning show Kevin & Bean talked to J.J. Abrams this morning. He said there fun LOST references in the film Cloverfield which comes out on 01/18. Kevin & Bean pointed out that a listener had spotted some of "the numbers" in the trailer, and J.J. said there were some nods to LOST in the movie, but they were just for fun."

Love your blog!

Jeff

YAY OCKHAM!! ok, maybe not YAY, but i still am celebrating that i spotted a vaguely coherent piece of the Lost puzzle. i am fine if that's the only one i get and sort of resigned to that actually. until its disproven at which point in time i'll whine.

I was just doing some LOST research on GoogleEarth and something in the Find815 story doesn't add up. The Sunda Trench is located South and West of Jakarta where Sam is heading to supposedly look for the Black Rock. However, the Black Rock was last seen in New Guinea heading East. Port Moresby (last known location of Black Rock) is at least 2500 miles East of the Sunda Trench. The Black Rock would have been heading in the complete opposite direction of the Sunda Trench. This brings up yet another theory. What if there are different portals around the world that lead to the Island? This would also explain how Anthony Cooper was abducted and got to the island so quickly. There could be a portal somewhere off the U.S. East Coast, say the Bermuda Triangle, that would lead to the Island. Coincidentally, Amelia Earhart was also heading East from New Guinea. Where was Mr. Eko's plane headed?

Your ongoing 'LOST' blog is great and keeps me coming back for more crazy theories as we get closer to revelations(?) in season 4.

I'd love to believe that 'Cloverfield' is related to the new season, but you're the only person that had that ***umption.

I'd LOVE to think that the protagonist in the movie was Smokey, but alas, you are the lone conspirator on that subject, and (even though nothing's been leaked...) JJ basically stated it was a "monster" movie based off of Japan's history of having giant things attack cities while taking his kid through a toy store and realizing we have no "Godzillas" in our culture.

I still have a little hope though...

Finally, I have to give my theory for the finale of season 3, and I'm the only one out there stating this...

The black doctor talking to "future Jack" is Walt! Fight me on it all you want, but the cadence and questioning that the doctor emotes along with his knowledge of Jack's past makes it pretty obvious.

The big question is who is in the coffin?? For 3 seasons we've watched Jack pull it all together and lead a group of disfunctional personalities through some pretty incredible predictaments; so what has Jack depressed enough to jump to his death? Regret??

Ben is in the coffin?

Nobody has ever concieved that it's actually Vincent laid to rest which makes the most sense with the small casket.

A dog has no history of visitors outside of its owners!
