Bob Saget's mob ties
If you've watched Bob Saget on something other than a Full House rerun, chances are you know that there are really two of him.
There's Family-Friendly Bob Saget, the one who played Danny Tanner and hosted America's Funniest Home Videos, and who now serves as host of NBC's game show 1 vs. 100. And there's Grown-Up Bob Saget, the one who got filthy in The Aristocrats and whose stand-up act can be as blue as the 1 vs. 100 set.
"It's exciting because it is not one thing," the comic says. "And I've never sat down and [said], 'This is going to be my next plot and I'm going to blow up my' -- the person or the path.
"Basically I was trying to get a pilot on the air. I did a pilot for every network for like six years straight. I directed a movie and wanted to go direct movies. ... And I just went, 'I've got to go be funny again. I've got to do standup.' And so I went into the trenches ... I just did an HBO special that aired that was very, I think, pretty blue. I wouldn't want little kids to watch it."
His current prime-time gig, however, is something he hopes both kids and their parents will watch. 1 vs. 100 returned to NBC earlier this month (its first two episodes back have averaged about 8 million viewers), with Family-Friendly Saget keeping the proceedings humming -- and occasionally slipping in a bit of PG-13 humor.
"I love the idea that people can all sit together and watch it," he says. "And then I'll say a couple things that -- which isn't what the show is about. You know, the show is about let's see if [someone can win $1 million]. But I'll get to say a few subversive things, I guess you would call them, that a dad might go, 'Oh hey, how did you like that?' And the 15-year-old son who happens to be home that night is going, 'Yeah, that was kind of funny I guess.'"
Saget undoubtedly knows a little more trivia now than before he took the job, but that doesn't mean he'd like his chances if he were the contestant facing the "mob" of 100 players.
"I get very deer-in-the-headlights whenever I'm asked any questions. And usually when I play any games, no matter what they are, I do not do well," he says.
"I can lie on my couch with my daughters and watch -- well, we were watching Regis [on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire]. That's kind of one of the reasons why I even ended up hosting 1 vs. 100. We were able to watch as a family and really enjoyed it. So if I'm lying there and I'm not moving -- just lying completely on a flat bed of some kind -- I can probably be lucid enough to answer the trivia question."
On stage, though, is another matter. As the show's host, he's not given the answers to the questions he asks ("that would be impossible and illegal," he notes). But even when he does know an answer, "I get caught up in the drama of it. Sometimes I'm not even sure if the answer is the answer because of all the stuff going on -- all the bells and whistles and the person's emotions."
1 vs. 100 airs at 8 p.m. ET Fridays on NBC.
One of the most shocking moments ever was in the movie Half Baked when Bob Saget said he did sexual favors for coke. I won't repeat the exact quote. I still can't get that quote out of my head!

Also, his HBO comedy special was pretty weird. It was very blue but there wasn't a lot of material there. It was basically an hour of him ragging on Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos. Kind of like a "stream of consciousness" thing. Funny in parts, but not a typical stand-up comedy act.
