Decision time on 'Scott Baio'
Scott Baio, we hardly knew ye.
Tonight's episode marks the season finale of Scott Baio is 45...and Single and it starts off with him talking about good and bad decisions he has made over the course of his life. Doing Charles in Charge was a good decision. His recording career was a bad decision. He wonders though about the decision he will have to make at the end of the week, whether to ask Renee to marry him or to let her walk away. Will he make the right one?
His last session with Doc Ali starts off with Scott being quite happy, it is, after all, his last session with Doc Ali. He has come to realize, he tells Ali, that he is single because he has always been looking for the next best thing. Ali asks if Scott is ready for marriage and Scott is saved from answering because his phone rings. Johnny V. (still on the outs with Scott) has sent Scott a text in which Johnny expresses his upset at being de-friended, at least partially because his boxer's are still in Scott's guestroom. When they finally get back down to business, Scott tells Ali that he hates the idea of all the planning surrounding a wedding -- the ring, the pre-nup, the ceremony, etc. Ali tells him that this week he should do some of that legwork, that he should look into these things. She, on the other hand, will meet with Renee (because she has always wanted to and Scott is happy to set it up).
Scott, with little to do, decides to go and play golf with his buds. He updates them on his life, telling them about Johnny V., having to do the legwork, and wanting to have a "graduation party" for finishing with Ali. His friend Jason will setup a meeting with a lawyer he is related to about the pre-nup, and Scott agrees to go with his other friend, Cuccio, to go and look at engagement rings.
When Scott does get to the lawyer's office, she asks what his biggest concern is at the moment with marriage and the pre-nup. Scott says, quite honestly, that he does not want to end up pumping gas if things do not work out in the marriage. The lawyer explains the pre-nuptial agreement timeline in the vaguest terms -- he gets engaged, then talks to his fiancée about the agreement, then to his lawyer, things get signed, and the wedding gets planned. She then asks if he needs an agreement. Scott will get back to her on that.
His next stop is the jewelry store, where Scott looks at several rings, including a lovely one that costs a mere $139,000 and another, almost as lovely one for $21,000. Throughout the ring-looking Scott receives text messages from Johnny V., and I wonder why Scott, who is annoyed with Johnny for texting him, refuses to simply turn off his phone.
While Scott is away doing the legwork, Doc Ali is meeting with Renee. Ali cautions Renee that when she does see Scott again he will be different, Scott has grown and changed. Renee is actually pleased by this, because if Scott is not different, she tells Ali, she will leave him. Ali's prodding is not done yet. She next asks Renee if she would like a child with Scott, and Renee responds that she would. Ali continues to press, asking if Scott is there, supporting Renee. Renee answers with a whole story about how Scott cut a pizza for her with a knife because she didn't have a pizza cutter (which is her way of saying yes).
With the party only a few hours away, Scott is overseeing plans and talking to his friend Jason on the phone (Jason, sadly, cannot make the party). Jason explains that Scott has to make a decision. He does not have to decide to marry Renee, but Scott, Jason says, is running out of tomorrows, he has to decide what he wants to do with his life. Scott practically crumples to the floor at the very notion.
Finally, the party arrives. Jason has sent a congratulatory ice sculpture that moderately resembles a tomb stone. Doc Ali is there, and Scott does not even seem unhappy to see her. She tells Scott what a pleasure it has been working with him. Two of Scott's ex-girlfriends are there and are all smiles, they seem to genuinely hope things work out for him. Finally, Renee arrives and gives Scott a huge hug. As Cuccio and Ali recap some of Scott's feelings and where he is headed, at least emotionally, Renee starts talking to ex-girlfriend Julie McCullough, about Renee's feelings. Renee again states she needs a commitment from Scott. And, soon enough, Scott is there and asks to speak to Renee privately.
Is that Johnny V. waiting at the gate with flowers? Never mind, Scott is talking to Renee. He thanks her for being patient with him, and, ever so slowly, says that he is ready to be married. Renee says she is too.
Is that what counts for a proposal in this day and age? Simply stating that one is ready to be married counts as asking someone else to marry you. Wait, Scott's reminiscing via voiceover is interrupted ⦠Renee is talking ⦠she's with child! Renee is having Scott Baio's baby! Thus the season ends with a fade to black â¦
Scott may be done for now, but that does not mean our relationship has to end, why don't you come on over and see me some time at The TV and Film Guy's Reviews.
Scott Baio is adorable and I love his honesty, which ya only get being from Brooklyn, like myself. I'm sure he'll be a great Dad, I am sorry to hear that his Dad passed away, I'm sure he would have been a great Grandfather and would have adored Scott's child.
Idea for a new series: Scott Baio is 46 ....... and gonna be a Dad.
They've picked up the show for a second season, so it will almost certainly end up with a title something like that.
Josh Lasser | Aug 28, 2007 2:27:30 PM | #Glad to hear that. I love Scott Baio. Nobody ever is surprised to see a camera coming at them and they are always already miked up. Takes a little bit away from the reality part to be so scripted. But I will watch every minute.
