Bathing suits and bad attitudes on 'A Model Life'
We start
out this week's episode of A Model Life with Petra giving the Models-In-Training tips about
posing in bathing suits with the help of swimwear designer Ashley Paige.
Unfortunately, all the girls seem to have given leave to their senses as
Valeria complains about her tiny bottomed two-piece, Beatrice sulks about not
liking the designs and Angelika doesn't pay attention because she already knows
everything about everything. As a matter of fact, almost all the girls seem
really…asinine today. They're all lethargic and when Petra tells them their
photo shoot will be with Diane Smith, Senior Editor of Swimsuit Illustrated,
only Angelika, Lucia and Michelle had heard of the magazine. As a collective,
they didn't make a good impression on Ashley – especially Valeria who
complained about her $2,000 suit and Beatrice who, once they found a great suit
for her, decided to wear ankle socks with them (Petra told her not to do that
on a go-see). This is one of those moments I'm reminded how young the MITs are.
The next
morning, Petra has the girls (sans Beatrice and Valeria who are out on jobs)
meet her at a city park to volunteer their time and help plant trees. Michelle
the Daywalker is the grumpiest out of them all as her inability to snack on
plasma on a regular basis makes it harder to tolerate the sun. Petra is all up
in it – shoveling, pushing a wheelbarrow, digging in the dirt with her gloved
hands – while the MITs kind of just stand around like useless lumps. It's a
fiasco.
Meanwhile,
Beatrice is at the Raven Jeans photo shoot and does a really good job. She had
fun and the clients were happy.
Back at
the farm, we have a solo interview with Lucia cut with some shots of the girls
"working." She says that once they got into it, they all enjoyed it.
Way to cover for the rest of them, Luci. You're still my favorite but you don't
have to lie for the others.
Meanwhile,
Valeria is at the CosmoGirl shoot. She also does great and the clients are
happy. Good times.
The next
morning, the MITs get ready to head out to the swimsuit shoot…but wait. Where's
Angelika? Michelle wants to leave without her (no, not because she sucked
Angelika dry and hid the body) but the other girls want to be nice and wait for
her. Like a bad Marx Brothers movie rip-off, they keep missing each other -
going up to the room and back to the lobby seconds after the others leave. By
the time they get to the shoot they are 32 MINUTES LATE. 32!!!
Brian
Lovely, the photographer, wants to know who's responsible so he can single her
out but they all share responsibility. He says hair and make-up had been there
for at least a half an hour ready to go. Lucia awesomely says, "We're
going to apologize. To everyone." Angelika asks if it's the same make-up
and hair that they've been working with, as if to say it's okay because of the
familiarity.
Cut to
Karl Giant, Make-Up Artist and owner of one of the best quotes I've heard all
week, who advises Abigail (who told him what really happened) "Don't be late
again. Like, just go by yourself and be like, 'See ya, b***es'."
Diane
Smith arrives and meets all the girls and has Abigail's crimped hair changed (I
don't blame her – crimping is wrong) and Valeria's make-up altered.
Valeria's
shoot goes well enough. I think the fact that she was wearing a different suit
helps.
Abigail
doesn't feel comfortable and doesn't do so well. She gets a break when a set
component needs to be adjusted and ends up going into the bathroom and crying.
Beatrice and Lucia tried to brighten her up but it took the supermodel powers
of Petra to talk Abigail down. Once she gets back on set, Abby does much
better. Maybe she should cry before every shoot.
Beatrice
didn't like her suit so her pictures were blah. Asinine.
Angelika,
oh Angelika. Despite telling Diane she didn't like the suit picked out for her
(which Diane chose to hide the fact she has no curves), Angelika does well in
the same suit she tried on at Petra's tip session. Also, Petra told Angelika
that second-guessing the person in charge of a photo shoot is unprofessional,
whether you like the outfit or not.
Michelle
the Daywalker actually does really well despite her skinniness. Diane says
she's "sophisticate, svelte, perfect for high-fashion."
Lucia,
courtesy of her curves and a kick-ass red one-piece with a super daring V that
cuts down past her belly-button, absolutely rocks her shots. Diane calls her
spectacular several times and I'm pretty sure Brian wants to take her home with
him. Not bad for her first swimsuit shoot ever. Me thinks Diane will be
giving her a call for the next SI Swimsuit issue.
NEXT
Agents and Good/Bad Cops Stephen and Tammy take a look at the photos the next
morning.
Beatrice
unsurprisingly gets the worst marks, followed by Valeria, Abigail and Michelle
who get tagged for being cute and/or bland. Angelika scores high for working
her suit but Lucia steals the show and renders Tammy and Stephen barely able to
put sentences together. Stephen agrees with me – she's definitely SI material.
The next
morning, Tammy hears about the girls showing up late, as does Joel Wilkenfeld
(Co-President). He calls the MITs in for a meeting and cuts to the chase. He
lectures them about the importance of showing up on time in a calm manner…but
then Angelika decides she wants to open her yap and make it worse.
They get
in a back in forth…I couldn't even begin to tell you everything that was said
because this was one of the most painful five minutes of TV I've ever had to
sit through. All the while they're cutting to the MITs who all look blank and
shell-shocked. Poor things.
Joel, to
his credit, never really yelled at Angelika – though I'm sure she'd rather he
had because he ends up telling her that she's being sent home. Angelika tries
to argue a bit more but Joel just leaves the conference room.
Next
episode: Angelika tries to stay, Beatrice messes up and just … a lot of fallout,
man.
I will buy next year's Sport Illustrated Swimsuit Issue if Lucia is in it. She's beautiful and has a great personality.

You do not give a client attitude, you do not give your boss the what-for.. and above all else, you do not give the impression that you think the industry you work in is "a joke" (her words). Even if it IS a joke, even if you truly believe that, you never, EVER let the people you work FOR know that.
Angelika is beautiful, she photographs well, and her spunk comes across in her photos--but she is impossible to work with. She gives people who have been in the industry FIVE TIMES longer than her problems. She tells them how it is as though she knows. How long could she have worked so far? Five years, tops?
Just because she photographs well doesn't mean she has the leeway to mouth off, dictate to magazine editors, and get in a pissing contest with the co-owner of Next. She seems to think that her looks and skill in front of the camera give her that right, but they DON'T. Maybe once she's paid her dues she can act like a diva (MAYBE!) but she'll never get there if she doesn't shut up and put up.
She needs to realize she's not a big fish in this pond, and with her attitude, she probably never will be. I'll be disappointed if she stays.

to be??!is a large part of modelling too!!Just what IS
her def. of such?!
Lucia - an absolute doll!! & my favorite - for her attitude
& kick ass body! totally deserves to get the contract!!
Love her!!!
Lucia is my favorite as well. She is beautiful, and she has a sweet personality. She's captivating. It's the eyes. I hope she'll win.
