'Idol' Results 04/04: 'Smile' through the tears
As usual, Wednesday (April 4) night's American Idol results show begins with a recap of the previous evening's standouts and several things bear repeating:
Melinda Doolittle? Brilliant, get over it all you "she's a boring troll" haters. Phil Stacey? Nice voice at times, but creepy. Haley Scarnato? Hot, but beauty pageant hot and probably a local beauty pageant, not a national pageant. LaKisha Jones? One note, but what a great note. Blake Lewis? Amusing, but overrated. Chris Richardson? Fun, but do we want to be listening to that nasally voice for another two months? Jordin Sparks? She's been called the dark horse by so many people that she's probably the favorite. Sanjaya Malakar? Learn to stop worrying and love the Sanjaya, America. Gina Glocksen? I left her for last because I keep forgetting her.
The week's Ford commercial is set to "One Love" and features our contestants going through a car wash/safari. The commercial isn't memorable until the very end, when Kermit the Frog makes a surprise cameo, perhaps attempting to do damage control after the widespread circulation of his damning "Sad Kermit" recordings.
The contestants are divided into a trio of groups of three. One features Blake, Chris and Sanjaya. One features Jordin, Melinda and LaKisha. And the one in the middle has Haley, Phil and Gina. Gee. There's lots of suspense here, isn't there? Sigh. But Ryan has to spin his wheels for 30 minutes, so he sends the Jordin, Melinda and LaKisha group off to safety as the group of top votegetters. That's not surprising. And then he says that Blake, the immortal Sanjaya and Chris are the middle group. Also not surprising.
Unfortunately, while Tony Bennett was featured last night as a mentor, he was too sick to appear tonight, but that doesn't stop Ryan Seacrest from doing a plug for Bennett's Duets album. Mission accomplished, Tony. Now if only any of the contestants had listened to a shred of your somewhat doddering advice last night. Fortunately, Ryan has always enjoyed talking to and about his buddy Michael Buble and he was able to call in a favor. Buble does a bluesy (and boozy?) rendition of "Call Me Irresponsible" and he also gets to plug for an album that won't be released until May and he even makes a funny.
Completely dead-pan, he asks Ryan, "Am I wasting my votes by still voting for Antonella Barba?"
Our fearless host responds, without missing a beat, "Nah, I do the same thing."
Time to send one member of the Bottom Three to safety. The crowd wants Gina sent back, but Phil's actually the man. I'm already getting unhappy about this. Can we mention one more time how admirable and impressive Haley's legs are?
Randy is a bit surprised by both Haley and Gina facing elimination. Paula, teeth set on edge, says that it's tough at this stage and that they should both be proud of themselves. Simon isn't at all surprised.
After the season's highest vote, 33 million votes, Gina is this week's bootee. Haley is confused. The crowd is miserable. Jordin is in tears.
Bottom Line: We'd had a couple of rough weeks in Idol-land, a couple marginally premature eliminations that left some fans shaking their heads. In Stephanie Edwards, the season lost one of its best voices. In Chris Sligh, one of its most distinctive personalities got the boot.
While hardly a contender for the season's big title, Gina is probably the third straight contestant to go home slightly early, but her problem was in presentation. She put herself out there as a rocker, which wasn't where her vocal strength was. But even if she would have been swiftly eliminated on a real rock competition, the judges kept repeating she was supposed to rock. It didn't matter that her rendition of "Smile" was better than several of her more highly praised songs. It wasn't what fans were told they were supposed to want.
Given the time to make it through her entire exit song, Gina does herself proud with a touching and heartfelt encore.
Thoughts on this week's results? Surprised? Sad? Pragmatic?
Bubl/e sucked, even if he is Canadian. He was stoned and/or hammered, and would have been booted off if he were a would-be Idol in the Am/Id sense. It only could have been good TV if both he and Seacrest came out of the glass closet on live TV.
I feel sorry for Gina; Haley and Sanjaya have GOT to go.
Are you people kidding? Who would buy a record from Phil or Sanjaya? Gina was one of the most interesting singers this year. Good luck Gina. You didn't deserve to go this early.
| Apr 4, 2007 8:53:33 PM | #Gina had atleast 2 more weeks in her on the show. This show is starting to suck!
DF | Apr 4, 2007 9:12:27 PM | #Well, that was unexpected....
Sorry to Gina go. I actually enjoyed her much more than I realized. (Now that she's gone, I feel kind of bummed.) And her rendition of "Smile" at the end is now one of my all-time favorite A.I. moments. Great job, Gina!
Mehtel | Apr 4, 2007 9:12:38 PM | #Bubble did seem boozy. What a train wreck.
Mehtel | Apr 4, 2007 9:15:57 PM | #Well no big surprise!! I knew Sanjaya wouldn't be going home!! I didn't expect it to be Gina though!! I really liked her!! Phil def. needs to go, as does ol' San J, and Haley!! Then I hope ol' Blakey goes, and Chris, I never really cared for either of them!! Although Chris is starting to grow on me!! I still think the top three left will be as was tonite, Lakisha, Melinda, and Jordin!! Starting to think Melinda might win it-- or who knows, maybe ol' San J!! I swear if one of those girls go before him--I'll reach right through the tv screen, & pop his little head off!! This is one time I wish the judges had some say in who goes home!! I'm waiting to see if Simon really would quit if our boy wins!! Hell if he does, that'll be the end of the road for me too!!
Michele | Apr 4, 2007 9:26:44 PM | #Gina talked back to Simon a couple of times, and people don't like that. He's a jerk, but most of the time he knows what he's talking about.
If Sanjaya goes far, expect some major changes in next year's format--and it is all the judges' fault for choosing him in the first place.
JJ | Apr 4, 2007 9:55:18 PM | #If sanjaya doesnt win, I think it will be because American Idol rigged the votes.
champt10 | Apr 5, 2007 12:47:51 AM | #Gina? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
It can't be! She had perky breastesses and a pretty face! She was TONS better than Haley, Phil, or Sanjaya. This is a tragedy of epic proportions!
Jack Jing Badabing | Apr 5, 2007 3:12:17 AM | #Sanjaya 2 win! Jordin rocks... Lakisha and Melinda tad too vboring all the the other guys bad and hayley well we'll keep that closed!
Sanjaya 2 Win
Mush | Apr 5, 2007 3:32:03 AM | #PLEASE rip that stupid, idiotic ring out of Jordin's nose. It's holding back her true beauty.
Dingle | Apr 5, 2007 4:11:59 AM | #I'm really starting to think that half the people that posted here are the same person under different names
Anyway- I was very surprised last night. Phil, Haley, and Sanjaya definitely should have left before Gina. Some could argue Chris and Blake too, but they are more 'memorable' than Gina a lot of times.
But who is to blame but America? If you don't vote, and I don't until sometimes the last few weeks of the competition, you can only complain so loud. And the majority of the people who say they will never watch again- I'm betting they still will or at least will ask other people or still search the internet to find out what happened.
EMP | Apr 5, 2007 5:07:18 AM | #
Gina did not deserve to go home. I have given up on my quest to get rid of Sanjaya (too many 11 & 12 year old girls watch the show). My quest is for Haley and Phil to get booted. Haley rolls her eyes in disapprovement when Simon comments about her legs, but the next day on the results show she's wearing shorts what were even shorter than her dress the night before. PUT ON SOME CLOTHES. If you don't want the sleezy comments, quit dressing like one!! I bet if she wears clothes that cover her the votes for her go down. It's obvious she's not on there for her singing ability. Phil just sucks and I can't look at him without thinking of Alians.
Amy K | Apr 5, 2007 5:12:55 AM | #Please , Please America get a clue!! Sanjaya needs to go!! Too many good singers have left when Sanjaya is clearly the worst of them all. I think Gina was actually good. I hope that America realizes this is someone who will represent "US" do we really want Sanjaya doing that? I do not. Please America get a clue!! I am tired of Sanjaya.
Kimberly | Apr 5, 2007 5:28:51 AM | #Sanjaya....has gone too far, but thats my opinion. Its obvious that alotta ppl like this gurly chaps. Why ??? All those idiots who are voting for him....argh!! Gina should not have gone home, it should have been haley or phil. We all know that Sanjaya is stayin for a while. I guess America likes weirdness {Sanjaya}
chris | Apr 5, 2007 6:01:31 AM | #The Idol judges are reaping what they have sown: they chose the participants, some of them clearly for the mix of personalities or styles or potential for controversy or whatever, and now they're upset that the so-so singers are still around. By now they should know what happens with the Howard Stern followers and "vote-for-the-worst" crowd and the tweeners. Fact is, it makes for good TV that Sanjaya is still around and that makes the sponsors happy.
Julie | Apr 5, 2007 6:02:10 AM | #this is getting out of hand...haley and phil got in the bottom 3 last night and escaped..sanjaya not in the bottom 3 is a sad mistake! Gina was brave when singing "smile" and fighting back tears after she was voted off. This is the last straw...Sanjaya, Phil and Haley must be voted off before the finale! I don't want to tune in to the Idol finale and see Sanjaya on the Kodak Theatre stage...next week, keep the phone away from the kids...if u care about American Idol...Melinda, Jordin, or Lakisha will win the crown this year...Jordin looks good with a nose ring...stop hating on her..again, keep the kids away from the phone next week. Sanjaya must go home!!!
mike | Apr 5, 2007 6:52:26 AM | #I was sooooo upset that Gina left. Her rendition of "Smile" was great. Phil or Haley should have gone home. Even though Haley has great legs that is the only thing she's got. Phil is just to creepy. Gina should have gone further in the competition. I am not going to say I will stop watching this season but if Sanjaya wins I may not watch next season at all.
KitKat | Apr 5, 2007 6:58:12 AM | #"While hardly a contender for the season's big title, Gina is probably the third straight contestant to go home slightly early, . . ."
Daniel, as long as Sanjaya is still lurking around, EVERYONE is definitely going home slightly early!
The Truth | Apr 5, 2007 7:01:27 AM | #You broke my heart, Fredo, you broke my heart.
Gina was one of maybe two contestests I was actully routing for. They talk about Melinda like she is some saint (didn't she dedicate her song to her hairdresser).
Gina, to me, really showed her goodness with every smile, with every facial expression, with every note.
AI has lost a part of its soul last night.
Not having been a fan of Gina all season, I was impressed by her very class act goodbye. That said, didn't Chris Daughtry prove last year, that even if you’re talented, identifying yourself as a rocker guy or chick won't win this contest? It's all in the audience demographics folks. Hard rockers are not a large segment of the AI viewers. Safe will win out against edgy every time with this audience. They do not want to be "screamed at" even if in tune and following a melody. I think she would have made it through if just for Tuesday night, she would have lost the tongue piercing. It made it hard to buy the song. Some will say she had to stay "true" to herself. Fine. But unfortunately, staying true to a rocker identity won't win this thing.
Bob | Apr 5, 2007 7:25:36 AM | #It's a cryin' shame.....Gina had nice breasts that I enjoyed watching each week.
With all of the boo-hooing going on last night, I wonder why the cameramen never cut to Paula. She's usually bawling right with them.
Jingles | Apr 5, 2007 7:33:44 AM | #Thats it Im done. Buh-bye American Idol,I wont miss you. Simon, guess you will have to invent another show. I loved Rock Star, maybe go do one like that? Cause this one has jumped the shark. Hayley the Vegas showgirlwannabe and Sanjaya of the Hair are still on? This isnt a American idol, Ashton Kutcher where are you? man we have all been Punk'd!!!!
patty | Apr 5, 2007 7:38:01 AM | #Sanjaya is not entertaining, he sucks. He does not make the show more interesting... I could not care less about how he'll look or what he'll do. He is "leave the room and get a snack time" for my family. My "tween" daughter thinks he's ugly and needs to go. It's a travesty that he is still on this show and others more talented are being shown the door before him. The folks voting for him because Howard Stern and that stupid website are telling them to do so are idiots and really need to get a life.
Brenda | Apr 5, 2007 7:47:01 AM | #Funny that someone else thought Michael Buble(sp?)
sucked at the song he sang. I was flipping channels and not knowing who he was, thought it was an idol contestant and actually felt sorry that they sounded so bad. What was up with that?
