WHAT TO WATCH

Hubris, thy name is Rob and Amber

By Daniel Fienberg

March 11, 11:16 PM

Rob_ambermariano_amazingrace11_240_1 First off, this post contains the usual assortment of spoilers. I'm too bitter about Sunday (March 11) night's Amazing Race: All-Stars to write much, but I wanted to make sure that fans of the show had a place to complain, celebrate and otherwise vent...

With that in mind, on to tonight's shocking conclusion, which I kind of saw coming...

Two semi-rhetorical questions:

1) Is there any reason for me to watch the reason this season now that Rob and Amber have been eliminated? Go Beauty Queens!

2) If they're not on Amazing Race anymore and nobody is watching their Fox Reality series, have Rob and Amber ceased to exist altogether?

It was a nearly unwatchable episode, since the entire hour was structured to set up Rob and Amber's demise, from the opening quote segment when Amber said they were peaking (and Rob insisted he hadn't peaked), to annoyingly edited detour (where we kept zooming in on Rob's inability to spell Philippines) to the over-emphasis on Rob and Amber's trickery with Charla and Mirna. The only question in the end was whether or not the fix was in and this would just happen to be a non-elimination leg. But it wasn't.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that Rob and Amber took a dive. They couldn't have done more things wrong if they'd tried. Certain things -- Rob knocking all of his letters to the floor in frustration, the Dynamic Duo basically walking to the pit stop -- spoke to a lack of the competitive fire they've always had in spades. But I don't really think they threw the game. I just think that after getting such great mileage out of Rob's mental quickness for so long, they had to deal with another reality: Rob may be clever, but he's also capable of being pretty stupid. And after the misspelled sign (not that they ever even figured out their gaffe) and the naval museum blunder, why did Amber let Rob do the mailbag Road Block anyway? Surely a task that required details and literacy should have been hers and hers alone?

The whole episode was set up so that people who already hated Rob and Amber would repeated confirmations of everything they most despised and those of us who loved the way they played the game would feel sick for an hour, particularly since all of Charla and Mirna's worst traits were also amplified for the hour.

Yup. Blech.

Sorry. I can't write anymore. Too miserable.

Anyway, how about you? Doing a little Happy Dance? Or are you miserable like me? And if you were rooting for Rob and Amber before, who are you rooting for now?

I'm agreeing with you completely. My only seasons to watch have been have been the two with Rob & Amber. If I keep watching, I guess I'd pick the beauty queens or the older couple, but you can tell, since I have no clue what any of their names are, I am not really that committed

Thank God, Rob and Amber are gone. Karma will always get you in the end.

I was sooooo happy to see Rob and Amber GONE! what comes around goes around. I for one was glad to see Charla and Mirna beat them in the end

Jon | Mar 12, 2007 4:20:01 AM | #

Yep, I'm done watching this show now. No reason to watch if there is no one else to root for.

B | Mar 12, 2007 5:57:18 AM | #

I'm happy they are gone. Now we can get rid of all the annoying Romber fans. Good riddance.

C | Mar 12, 2007 6:26:56 AM | #

I was very disappointed to see Rob and Amber go. They were definitely not at the top of their game. I'll continue to watch but not with as much enthusiasm. I guess Dustin/Kandice or Oswalt/Danny would be my next choices to win.

LinLee | Mar 12, 2007 7:41:58 AM | #

Damn! Of ALL the episodes to miss, I miss Rob and Amber's fall. Stupid daylight savings. Perhaps I can find it on youtube.

Jason | Mar 12, 2007 7:53:34 AM | #

Oh yeah, let's just kill off the Romber fans too, because we're so evil. *rolls eyes*

Even though it was obvious it was coming from the editing (CBS is anything but subtle), it sucked big time. I liken it to a great sports team having a horrible game against a subpar and inferior opponent (i.e. Georgia vs. Vanderbilt College Football, 2006). They're a much better team than this, and losing to the likes of Charla and Mirna is disgusting. They really need to put us out of our misery with those two.

I'm not really rooting for anyone anymore. But especially NOT the BQ's, C/M, or U/J.

Melissa | Mar 12, 2007 7:56:40 AM | #

Thank God, those two bimbos were eliminated. Karma is something that you just can't run from. Rob being completely cocky seized there doom and now anyone can win the race.

Aaron | Mar 12, 2007 8:30:53 AM | #

With Rob and Amber gone, who cares who wins. I will only watch so that I can pray that Mirna and Charla will go soon. Watching them self destruct is some of the best TV there is.

doug | Mar 12, 2007 8:45:09 AM | #

Sorry, but Amber was a mean-spirited witch last night. Glad they're gone. They wore out their 15 minutes of fame and media welcome a long time ago.

Tim | Mar 12, 2007 8:55:07 AM | #

I only watched the Amazing Race because of Rob and Amber. They are a cute couple. When Rob was on, he was fascinating to watch. They really clicked. I'm only disappointed they didn't go further.

Chris | Mar 12, 2007 9:03:01 AM | #

Can someone please hit the buzzer and stop Rob and Amber - their 15 minutes of fame are UP! End this crap now!

Jason | Mar 12, 2007 9:12:25 AM | #

my only complaint is that Amber didn't fess up that she had lied - it's a race - if you're stupid enough to believe it when she said "I GOT IT" then you deserve to lose. I would have been gloating about lying and making those two partially fall for it ~rme~ So now what will the other teams complain about? LOL

Donna | Mar 12, 2007 9:23:02 AM | #

I agree, there is no reason to watch this show anymore, the show was Rob and Amber! I'm so upset over this! The dwarf should've went! It's a disgrace, Rob and Amber are great together and were a joy to watch. Maybe they'll go on an All-Star Survivor next!

Barbara | Mar 12, 2007 10:10:51 AM | #

Yeah!!! This is the news I've been waiting for! I can now START watching The Amazing Race All-Stars. I was really worried that I wasn't going to be able to watch because those two were on. Yippee!!!!

Alice | Mar 12, 2007 10:40:08 AM | #

I actually don't care about it anymore either. They should have made it a non-elimination leg of the race on the fly. Rob & Amber were the only reason to watch. That said, it's not right to ask a Red Sox fan to do something literate like spell. Should be interesting to see if there's a ratings drop.

I know I no longer care. About the only thing I want is to see the midget and her cousin gone.

Marc | Mar 12, 2007 10:44:17 AM | #

Rob and Ambers demise really opens the show up for anyone to win, but also makes it less interesting. They were so good as team when they wanted to be. It was always amazing how they pulled out a win every time. It did almost seem like they were giving up. I will probably still watch, but if I miss an episode oh well, no biggee. I just want to see Charla and Myrna have a breakdown again. Thats fun TV.

Nathan | Mar 12, 2007 10:49:56 AM | #

No reason to watch now. Romber's snarkiness was at least entertaining. The rest - boring as all get-out. Watch the ratings plummet.

Julie | Mar 12, 2007 11:00:19 AM | #

Yep, I'm done watching the show. I only watched to cheer on Romber and with them now gone, I'm over it. I don't care about the other teams and only wanted to see Rob and Amber win or at least make it to the finalle. Hope we see them again soon! Maybe there will be a twist where the bring contestants back (ok, a girl can dream).

Lindsey | Mar 12, 2007 11:05:53 AM | #

They may be done on the amazing race but it's only a matter of time before they get on some other reality show. Between them they've done what? Survivor twice (I think), The amazing race twice, televised their wedding, and had a reality show where Rob wants to be a poker player. All the reality shows they've done it's a wonder more people aren't sick and tired of them.

| Mar 12, 2007 11:31:31 AM | #

I'm so happy that Rob & Umbah are gone!!!! I'm sick of them and I agree with Tim...they've worn out their 15 minutes!
I'm guessing that U & J will pull off the win...though I would REALLY like to see Ian & Terri win!!!

Cheri | Mar 12, 2007 12:00:20 PM | #

man I still don't understand how the heck they went from first place to last and being eliminated. Im getting tired of seeing charla and mirna and their constant whining. It's a lock that they're the next ones to get eliminated.
But how about Amber's "I got it" lol that was so slick.

Ed | Mar 12, 2007 12:05:56 PM | #

Well... There was one thing that made me watch that show... Rob and Amber... The only rue participant that understood that this was a race for $1,000,000... Now there is one thing that will definitly stop me from watching that show... Charla and Myrna!!!!!! Come on!

CS | Mar 12, 2007 12:34:06 PM | #

I'm glad Romber are gone as I felt they shouldn't have been on All-Stars in the first place, however I can't wait for Charla and Mirna to get the boot since I can't stand their whining.
