'Veronica Mars': Logan takes heart
Normally, I'd say save me from precocious, nosy and interfering kids, but 11-year-old Heather (Juliette Goglia) grew on me, kind of like a fungus.
Don't get me wrong. The "moppet who saves Logan from the mopes" was a glaring plot device with plenty of awkward dialogue. And don't even get me started on how the writers had Dick hook up with her sister in Vegas just to expose Heather to Logan for an adequate amount of time. Nevertheless, at least it got our LoVe-sick boy back in the swing of things and allowed him a couple funny lines.
Yes, he was still a sad sack, but in a funny and sympathetic -- not necessarily depressing -- way. And even though Heather was a bit too smiley, Jason Dohring played Logan with just the right amount of incredulity, reluctance and self-deprecation that at least felt realistic in such a silly situation.
One clue that Logan was feeling better was when he found out over the phone that Dick had just eloped, and told Heather that the person on the phone was just her brother-in-law. That's positive, right?
Logan's reawakening is the only real progress from "Postgame Mortem," which introduced a second mystery to march alongside the O'Dell murder. The Mars clan gets pulled in when Hearst basketball player Josh (Jonathan Chase) is accused of offing his dad, the team coach, because of a locker room argument.
I'm not quite certain what the point of this whole charade is, except to set up the not-so-surprising cliffhanger ending of Veronica getting arrested for helping Josh fly the coop. You see, she had just visited him in the clink to give him some reading material (nice touch with the Count of Monte Cristo and the imprisonment theme). Of course, when the scenes from next week show her freed from jail, it sort of ruins the suspense.
The Dean O'Dell mystery grew deeper with the addition of a possible second man in the hotel roomy arguing with Prof. Landry and the fact that Mindy's Volvo was missing from the hotel around the time of the dean's murder. Seriously though, I'd hate for either Mindy or the professor to be guilty because that would be just far too cliche.
Even though there wasn't a satisfying conclusion to the mini mystery, this episode was an adequate and lighthearted transition from the previous week's moodiness to the upcoming action-filled episodes that will have to keep the viewers interested while VM goes on hiatus while the Pussycat Dolls strut their stuff.
A few additional highlights:
- Dick waxing eloquent about a hot chick: "She's volcanic hot, like I might need an oven mitt to feel her up."
- Weevil to Veronica while waiting to meet the PCH-ers: "I don't know what to say. Gang kids are usually quite punctual."
- Logan's insistence that Heather practice more on Mario Cart because he's beating her with Peach.
- When Veronica runs into Logan and his charge in the elevator and asks, "Is that my shirt?" after noticing her tiny T on the tween.
Will Logan fight for Veronica or will he move on? What's with Veronica and Josh anyway? Why are Logan and Heather playing Mario Cart and not Guitar Hero?
I must agree I didn't really care for Logan's subplot in this episode, except for the elevator scene, which was just great.
I can't help but think that the coach's murder must be connected to Dean O'Dell's. Otherwise it just seems so unrealistic that two prominent faculty members at the same college are murdered within a couple months of each other.
I was actually glad to see the mini-mystery NOT solved in one episode for once. That only furthers my theory that it must all be connected. It's always all connected on VM.
And it was nice to see Wallace for 30 seconds, but where's Piz and Mac?
Jason | Feb 14, 2007 8:19:16 AM | #Wait, we already know who the second man in the hotel room arguing with the Prof is, don't we? Wasn't it Dean O'Dell himself? He did go to the hotel that night and confront the two of them, didn't he? Or am I remembering that wrong?
Jane | Feb 14, 2007 8:19:30 AM | #The elevator scene was one of the best on TV in the last several years. Priceless!
". . . possible second man in the hotel roomy arguing with Prof. Landry . . ." That would be the good Dean O'Dell himself, as we saw last fall.
VFan | Feb 14, 2007 8:28:43 AM | #Yeah that scene came back to mind last night. I always was a bit baffled by it because we never saw what happened at the hotel and then he's back in his office again. Clearly there was a confrontation. And if Landry and Mrs. O'Dell are innocent, why haven't they mentioned that the Dean showed up there that night.
The only thing that bothered me about that was the fact that the Room Service guy remembered all that from like 2 months before...
Jason | Feb 14, 2007 8:37:36 AM | #I quite enjoyed the the elevator scene. Jason Dohring(Logan) is a great actor, comedic or otherwise.
It had to be Dean O'Dell...who else could be??hmmmm.
Nadia | Feb 14, 2007 11:55:35 AM | #I loved Dick this episode..when he was telling Logan about the beach-blowout "you can wear your 'i'd rather be crying' t-shirt."
If we are going to have stand alone episodes, I hope they are as good as this.
And if Logan's rich, can't he get a Wii?
tiff | Feb 14, 2007 12:38:24 PM | #I loved the eleavator scene. They need to keep the girl alitte bet. I think it is Dean O"Dell arguing with Landry and Mindy there and thats why the guy heard two men argue.
LoVefurevr | Feb 14, 2007 3:23:27 PM | #I liked last nights episode...even though I thought some stuff was just a time filler.
My favorite part with Veonnica was when she heard the dedication and she turned of the radio. It sort of shows that Veronica is sticking to her gunns about Maddeline Sinclair and Logan. I love the show for what its worth but I believe that we don't see enought of Weevil, Mac, Piz, Parker, Lamb, or even Wallace....aren't they in the title sequence for the show. Now it just seems like they have been bumped to reccuring status. I thought the mystery for the episode, when the basketball players father died, I think Wallace should have had more air time, not Robet Ri'Chard. As for the the O'Dell murder, I believe it was Mindy's eldest son. Didn't he say that Cyrus was going to send him away....and it would leave hi mom open to get back with his fathr(Grieco).
Are you even a LoVe Fan Martel. So if you aint get off. These are my Couples in order:
1. LoVe
2. Piz&Veronica
3. Logan&Parker
4. Dick&Mac
5. Piz&Parker

9. Veronica&Weevil
10. Veronica&Wallace
11. Wallace&Mac

LoVefurevr | Feb 14, 2007 4:02:43 PM | #Just to let everyone know the 11 year old girl's name is Juliette Goglia. Check out her website at www.juliette-goglia.net
Hayley | Feb 14, 2007 4:40:42 PM | #I thought it was Dean O'Dell arguing with the Prof,too.
My theory is that it's the Dean's son who killed him, the one who was in his room in the last episode listening to music with earphones.

HI-5-0 | Feb 14, 2007 4:46:42 PM | #I am constantly amazed at your take on TV shows. I watched VM for the first time in a few weeks and was not especially impressed. But apparentally even the most cliche plot device isn't enough to deter you. Well, at least you are consistent.
Deb | Feb 14, 2007 6:31:36 PM | #Well if you are just joining VM this season I think the first two seasons were stronger and more impressive, cohesive. That said the show and it's characters are worth spending time with. Personally I wish they would have more Weevil, it was good to see him in this episode, same with Wallace. I think some of the strongest stuff from the show are the relationships, which were defined in seasons 1 & 2 for the long time viewer. I think Amy summed it up when she said that even a bad episode of Veronica Mars is better than most TV shows.
Dan | Feb 15, 2007 6:20:45 AM | #well i think the new season of veronicas is great i thought that logan and veronica will never get back together but they did
i think veronicas mars is the best tv shows i have ever seen
