'Prison Break' stuck in a death spiral

Rockmonddunbar_prisonbreak_240When did sweeps periods cease to be about long-planned weddings, unplanned childbirth (in elevators, preferably) and awkward guest appearances by Cher? When did producers determine that the only ways to goose viewership were impending death, near death and actual death?

There have been so many small screen slayings this season, that it's ceased to have any meaning, particularly since at least half of the slaughtered characters have found their way back to the realm of the living with minimal repercussions. Yeah, Meredith Grey. I'm looking at you.

Like Zap2it's own TV Gal, I'm tired of it.

[Spoilers here, just in case you didn't guess.]

We're in the final week of sweeps and first on the killing floor was Monday's (Feb. 26) Prison Break, which left viewers with a cliffhanger-and-a-half. Will C-Note successfully off himself, thereby assuring his wife and daughter of a life without the evil attentions of FBI goon Mahone? And will Kellerman successfully take revenge on the President who left him out in the cold by shooting her with a high-powered rifle?

Tune in next week!

Well, next week isn't sweeps anymore and I'm betting than both C-Note and the unseen president are going to survive.

Prison Break has been enjoying a slaughter-happy season, as Bill Fichtner's unstoppable Mahone has managed to track down and eliminate Tweener, Abruzzi and Haywire all by himself. That's saying nothing of the myriad supporting characters who T-Bag or Kellerman have killed (three this week alone!) just for kicks. But Tweener was a little putz (on-screen and, allegedly, off), Abruzzi was a vicious mobster and Haywire was a murderer, albeit a sentimental one. Killing those three didn't take any guts at all. But killing C-Note wouldn't do anything for the show's narrative and it would require the producers to eliminate a character whose greatest crime was being caught in a dull subplot. I doubt the producers have the guts. I'd guess the noose or the pipe snap. The only thing his death would accomplish is making Mahone guiltier than he should be already. Yawn.

But enough already. When the creative team on 24 killed off Teri Bauer at the end of Season One, they were making a shocking point: On this show, anybody can die. In today's TV landscape, it's more surprising when somebody lives.

A few additional quick thoughts on this week's episode:

  • Is EuropeanGoldfinch.net going to every mean anything or will it just keep being a red herring?
  • Was anybody glad to see L.J. again? How has that character managed to survive?
  • So Sucre knows that the authorities know he's in Mexico and his first and only plan is to go stay with his aunt? I could be wrong, but I don't think that'll be safe for long.
  • On a similar note, maybe Michael and Lincoln should have chosen a place to meet Fake Cooper Green that wasn't in a direct sight line to the hotel where they were staying. I've lost a lot of respect for Michael's intellect this season. He seems to only be smart about things that are tattooed on his abs.
  • Kellerman's got some serious issues when it comes to women, but perhaps the root of his misogyny can be tied back to his mom, as he tells his sister, "Just cuz someone spits you out of her crotch doesn't make them your mother."

Do you think C-Note's really dead? Do you think Kellerman will kill the President? Who else seems marked for death? And do all of these deaths make you enjoy the show more or less?

c-note is trying to save his wife and DAUGHTER, not girlfriend

Am I the only one who finds it weird that the story takes place in the year 2005 (According to the date on Tancredi's grave). And yet President Reynolds is in the middle of a re-election bid?

    I want C-Note to live. I think he's awesome.

You know who should be re-cast as President Reynolds? Tatum O'Neal. She is doing a bang-up job playing psychopath Blythe Hunter on MyNetworkTVs "Wicked Wicked Games"

Shame on you, Tim, for watching anything on MyNetworkTV.

Good point about the year. I noticed that on the grave, but obviously, like on LOST, little time has p***ed since the beginning of the show.

No need to recast Reynolds. It looks like Patricia Wettig is back next week. I was very glad to see L.J. back this week. Hope to see more of him.

Anybody bothered by the placement of that pipe in C-Note's cell? Like they would every put a pipe in such a convenient place for hanging oneself.

People, stop looking for logic and enjoy the ride! The producer of 24 summed it up best: it's better to bend logic and be exciting, than be completely logical and boring. For example, how improbable is it for Bellick and T-Bag to be on the same plane. And yet, it'll be totally great when they come face-to-face.

Kellerman's crotch line was awesome! The actor's ability to switch from deadly serious (shooting the gun dealer) to sentimental (with his sister) is amazing. Funny how he started the season on the sidelines (chasing Sara), and is now very intricate to the storyline.

I'm hoping the season ends with Kellerman and Mahone forced to join forces and take down the Company, or the President, or Agent Kim. Nothing is greater than enemies having to unite to take down a common foe.

Back with another long blog. I thnik C-Note will not die and be admitted into the hospital. Afterwards, Mahone will become fustrated andtake away his daughter's medical care and his wife's freedom After that he will shoot Mahone or die from a heart attack from anger or stress after being in bad shape

    2) Kellerman will probably not shoot President Reynolds. If he did I think it would be some other agent would take out Kellerman like Agent Kim or the mysterious Pad - Man

3)I think that Bellick will die before the season's conclusion. Also, i think it is vital to bring back some characters like Samantha Brinker. Another possibility is that Agent Kim will be killed in the season finale

    4) For me who and howmany die is not what im concerned aboutalthiugh as long as they have steady main characters it does not bother me

? NOW I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ALL PRISON BREAK FANS....

ARE YOU DISSAPOINTED WITH THE LOW AMOUNT OF VIEWERS WATCHING EACH EPISODE? ONLY 9.3 MILLION PEOPLE WATCHED MONDAY'S EPISODE AND DO YOU THINK THAT PRISON BREAK WILL BE RENEWED FOR A THIRD SEASON?

Yes! Prison Break will be renewed for Season 3. It comes in second or third just about every week it is on -- that is not bad at all for Fox's standards.

I love this show. It saddens me how they continue to kill off the convicts. While Haywire, Tweener, and Abruzi was legit, and impacted the storyline, C-Note has been a strong moral character to this show. I feel like he is almost a backbone. The Convicts in general are a backbone to the show. I sure hope they continue to use the remaining 4 or 5 (depending on C-Note surviving or not) convicts as main storylines in the show. If they do away with all of the convicts by the end of the season, it will be the show's demise.

I hope C-Note is still alive.

I THNK PRISON BREAK SHOULD BE RENEWED AND I AM FORMING A PTETION HERE ON THIS BLOG

WHOEVER WANTS PRISON BREAK RENEWED FOR A THIRD SEASON

Prison Break should be renewed..it's a great show. Ratings would be better if it was not on Fox. Sorry to see that there are only 4 more shows.

Yes, I believe that FOX has already given the official greenlight for the third season. However, I believe that most of the cast won't be back next year...just my speculation, NO SPOILERS. I think that only Lincoln, Michael, Sara, LJ and Kellerman will be the main players. I have a feeling that Mahone and Agent Kim will be killed off, while Sucre and C-Note will be in prison again next season. Of course, there should be some big twists coming up, so I'm probably wrong on some of the chracters' fates.
