'Prison Break' goes Haywire
Monday (Jan. 29) night's new episode of Prison Break began by teasing viewers with what looked like a news bulletin, complete with Fox News insignia and info graphics. I suspect at least a few more gullible fans were initially ticked off that FOX would interrupt their favorite 8 p.m. serial before realizing that the anchor was announcing the whereabouts of fictional escaped convicts Lincoln Burroughs and Michael Scofield.
I can't imagine that many viewers paid attention to the news crawl at the bottom of the screen, a ticker saying that fictional House Leader Matt Petersen, speaking on the issue of troop withdrawal from Iraq, "declared that setting any kind of time limit will only 'aid the insurgency and further unify the r...'" Nice of the network's narrative show to imbed the kind of message frequently espoused by the more conservative pundits (are there any other kind?) on FOX's sibling news channel. I'm not sure if that's verisimilitude or subliminal advocacy.
But enough about Prison Break's showrunners faux-electing a legislature out of touch with the opinions held by a majority of Americans in polls.
Monday's episode gets my approval because of the triumphant return of Silas Weir Mitchell's Haywire and his trusty dog Larry. It's lamentable that Haywire and Larry are no closer to Holland now than when we last left them, still attempting to build a seaworthy vessel and accumulate provisions for the journey. Yes, I know that many fans aren't fans of the Haywire subplot and won't cotton to this episode's digression, which found Haywire taking an unexpected interest in a small town waif (Kaley Cuoco) with daddy issues. What? You'd rather watch C-Note sit in a trailer park talking on his cell phone?
My suggestion for next season: Kill off Lincoln, Michael, C-Note, Dr. Tancredi, Sucre and Mahone in the finale. There are already too many characters. Build next season around a game of cat-and-mouse between Kellerman and T-Bag, while Haywire and Larry roam the country like David Banner or Richard Kimball, vaguely evading the law, but mostly going from town to town helping battered wives and abused children. Cuoco is welcome to join them as eye-candy. That's Must-See TV.
Other thoughts on this week's episode:
So, are you pro-Haywire or anti-Haywire? And did you enjoy the episode?

I'm not anti-Haywire, but his character and subplots are definetely not the reasons I keep watching. I seriously think the writers are losing their inspiration as each episode goes by. All of Fox's good writers must be working on 24 because it's sure not the O.C. or Prison Break. Haywire needs to get a little more dangerous and we need to know more about his back story. Sucre needs to get caught by Mahone so he can be used as bait to get Micheal and Lincoln. C-Note needs to attempt to break his girlfriend free and get caught in a crossfire saving his family and die. Bellick needs to go work for Mahone and then screw up and end up with his old job back so ha can dish out some payback at Fox River.
Actually, there are several non-conservative pundits on Fox News. You would know that if you took the time to find out instead of relying on what others tell you.
The second season of Prison Break has lacked the unity of the first. Last year it was more compelling to watch the 10 prisoners trying to work together on Michael's escape plan. This year it's been so confusing with 8 fugitives in all different directions and a very slow timeline (has it only been 2 or 3 weeks since they broke out of Fox River?). I can't even keep track of how fast Mahone seems to travel cross-country from the Chicago FBI office to the various western States (can he magically teleport like Jack Bauer?).
I will continue to watch the rest of this season, but my expectations are low for the upcoming third season. I have a feeling (no spoilers) that only Michael, Lincoln, Sara and Kellerman will survive through season 3. I think the other fugitives will be caught, like Sucre and T-Bag.
So sorry your poor eyes had to look at the Fox News Channel logo for all of 30 secs. Why don't you just comment on the show and leave 'your' political views out it? I hear no complaining from you about the all liberal network CNN. What a tool!
Who is this hack who writes this recap? - kill off Linc, Michael, etc? What is this guy on?
I say we kill off Fienberg's access to a computer.
Even when the show veers off course on a now weekly basis it still is entertaining. Dominic Purcell is one damn fine looking man. I'll take him over pretty boy Michael anyday.
I believe that the Frito Bandito has absolutely nothing to do with Disney in general nor with EPCOT in particular. There is however a wonderful boat trip available in EPCOT's Mexico pavilion as well as very satisfying Mexican restaurant.
What's the deal with Lincoln/Dominic a buttons? What does he have against using them? Even on the PSA about mentoring, he's got his shirt unbuttoned. What's up with that?
I wouldn't mind a Haywire and Larry show! I thought Haywire would have been out on the lake by the time they brought him back on the show, so his lack of progress is surprising. I'm worried about him, though, as Fox's episode description for next week does not bode well for an unspecified character.
Why on Earth do the writers of Prison Break need to kill off Lincoln and Michael? That would totatlly ruin the show and the premise of the show. If you hate Prison Break so much, go watch stpid Deal or No Deal.
