Review: 'Day Break'

Tayediggs2_daybreak_s1_240The shorthand everyone's been using for ABC's new series Day Break is Groundhog Day meets Training Day, and to an extent that's accurate. It's about an L.A. detective (Taye Diggs) who's framed for murder and who keeps reliving the day of his arrest over and over.

I wish I could offer a better logline than that, but after watching three episodes of the show I can't quite get a handle on it. It's by no means a bad show, but it ranks right up there as one of the more puzzling new series of the season.

That's not just because the show's central mysteries -- who's framing Detective Brett Hopper (Diggs) for killing an assistant district attorney and how or why he keeps reliving this day -- are kept intentionally murky through the first three hours (the premiere runs two hours). That's part of it, to be sure. But Day Break also offers up at least two other mysteries, one involving Hopper's partner (Victoria Pratt) and the other dealing with Hopper's down-low involvement in a federal case.

I'm sure, given the way that serialized crime shows work, that they're all connected, and indeed, the third episode takes pains to point out the ties between the murder and the federal sting. But when the motives of the primary crime are so fuzzy early on, the other stuff only seems to clutter things up that much more.

One thing that I'm less worried about than when I first saw the pilot is whether the show's creators have really thought out the consequences of Hopper reliving the day armed with knowledge of what happened before. (Although Diggs assured us of the show's quality with his "I'm Taye Diggs!" declaration (scroll down to July 18) over the summer, I remained skeptical.)

The variations in each day are sometimes subtle, and they're not always just about Hopper. In one scene he tells his girlfriend Rita (the lovely Moon Bloodgood) not to ignore a call from her ex-husband, fellow cop Chad Shelten (Adam Baldwin, appropriately menacing), which then ripples through the rest of the day. It's pretty cool.

Also of note is the fact that, unlike Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, if Hopper physically suffers in one version of the day, his wounds carry over to the next. That's not true for those around him, though, which is a good thing for them: The show has a pretty high body count, though once you know they'll be back in the next episode, the stakes fall a little bit.

What's not apparent at all in the first three shows is just what is causing Hopper to experience the same day over and over. There are hints in episode three that he's not the only one caught up in the vortex, but we're going to have to wait for that payoff.

Diggs is pretty convincing as a man trying to make sense of the two huge upheavals in his life, and his physicality serves the part well too. It's a really nice show to look at, filming in disparate parts of L.A. to great effect.

I'm willing to hang with Day Break for another episode or two beyond these three, just because I'm a sucker for a mystery. But I really hope the show lets me shake that puzzlement I'm feeling, and soon.

I am planning to watch just for Victoria Pratt & Adam Baldwin. Funny how they don't show either actor in any of the teasers! After seeing the first 20 minutes on line, those 2 are enough to get me to watch for awhile.

I'm with you, Sarah.

Adam Baldwin is reason enough to watch.

Maybe, for me, the only reason. (Yum!)

I'm looking forward to watching and tivo'ing this show. I like Taye Diggs a lot. I even liked him in "Kevin Hill" on UPN, which, unfortunately, was canceled last season. He is reason enough for me to watch. He always gives quality performances and I hear critics project his performance in "Day Break" will garner him an Emmy nod. I hope this show survives, which is wishful thinking with a Black lead character.

I just finished watching the 2 hour pilot, and I am definitely hooked! Taye Diggs is a convincing action hero/leading man. Even Rita didn't fall into the typical 'dumb' girlfirend stereotype.

The highlight of the episode was seeing Mitch Pileggi and Adam Baldwin together again on prime time TV. Wow! I was literally on the edge of my seat--even if I did know that Hopper would not be the one who died in any of the scenarios. Other dramas could learn from this show; focus more on the action and less on melodrama. I will be tuning in, and hopefully ABC will air all 13 episodes. I need to find out the reason Hopper was framed and why he keeps repeating the same day.

it was great!, it was groundhog day meets 24.

steve | Nov 16, 2006 10:48:27 AM | #

The first two episodes were better than I had expected. There was plenty of action, and I liked how Hopper figured out quickly that the same day was repeating. This show is a keeper--better than 99% of the other new dramas this season. Also, wonderful and talented actors all around, especially Diggs, Baldwin and Pratt.

Other than Adam Baldwin, this show sucks. Taye Diggs can't act with his monotone voice and blank expressions. The premise is ludicrous and unsustainable. Too bad I can't get my two hours back - maybe I can make a show about that.

Well, I watched some of Day Break last night. Just for an hour. I got sick and tired of the puzzlement throughout the story. and the fact that you'll have to wait 12 weeks before you get some answers to the mystery. I love Taye Diggs. He's fantastic, but I guess I'm too impatient to wait 12 weeks. That's too long to find out all the answers. I think also that I just don't like the idea of seeing a show where you're living a day over and over and over again. Get to the point! That's what I want to see. And Yes, I saw Groundhog Day and didn't like that movie for the same reason. I wish Taye Diggs loads of luck and I would love to see him beat the crap out of everyone who's hurt him, but I don't think I'll wait for 12 weeks.

I watched and enjoyed the show, thought every thing went off pretty well. And while I agree its a bit far fetched, its entertaining to me. Good luck to the show, hope it doesn't get pulled like CBS's Smith did.

I thought very highly of Day Break. It was both entertaining and well acted. I hope it runs its 13 seasons.

Im leaving a family gathering to see it tonight. I thought it was great!

Well, if you liked those Ashley Tisdale bikini pictures from a couple weeks back, you'll probably enjoy these Ashley Tisdale nipple slip pictures. Technically, these are actually more like "down blouse" pictures, rather than nipple slip pictures, but if that's what you're worried about, I think you're missing the point.

The point, of course, being Ashely Tisdale's nipple. Which coincidentally enough is itself pointy. Or is that puffy? Okay, that's more analysis that I ever wanted to do. Just look at the damn pictures.

We love to catch celebrities unwittingly showing them. Sometimes it's an genuinely unintentional nipple slip, other times it's obvious they're doing it for attention. But we've never had a celebrity show off her nipples on national television. Especially not a third nipple. But that's exactly what British singer, and cutie, Lily Allen did.

Yes, Lily Allen has a third nipple, and she's definitely not afraid to show it off. She actually whipped it out in the middle of an appearance on a British game show, and had the cameras zoom right in. Now you know you're never going to see that on American TV.

I want to try out the online casinos (play for money) but I'm wondering these online casinos are just online video games, that in turn, is a fixed program, so the edge is obiviously on their side.
On top of that, I guarantee you that whoever created these game programs can let the user (casino) adjust the odds of winnings. Does anyone have a good idea how this work before I blow my money online or should I just play the real thing in a real casino.
